Hello,

Our family is planning a move to Northern Idaho and we are researching properties to purchase. We have come across a house that is on the Indian Reservation outside of St. Maries.

Could anyone tell me what the implications of living on the reservation are? Do we have a fee that we have to pay to the tribe? Are we just leasing the land? Any information that you could give me on this issue would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you.

Default St. Maries

Living on a reservation is usually no different than living anywhere else. You should be able to own land with no fee payments. Before you purchase property, be sure to check with a local title insurance company to find if there are any restrictions. The Coeur d'Alene Tribe is very progressive, business minded. Their casino/resort/golf course north of Worley is quite nice.

We lived outside St Maries on the Benewah for 10 years, it was on the indian reservation. There are no fees to the tribe, the land is technically yours and you get to pay the taxes every year!! :O) But all members of the tribe are allowed to hunt & fish on ANY land that exists on the reservation. We had 3 elk shot in our drive way by a group of indians and all we could do was sit and watch them gut 'em & take 'em. We also had a stream on our land, the fish & game did some stocking and told us we were not allowed to fish for a certain length of time but that did not apply to those of the tribe. It was kinda hard to walk down to get the mail and see them fishing on my land when I couldn't.

I don't want to discourage you from buying on the reservation, but you need to know going into it and decide if that is something you are willing to 'share'.
