What does that mean? From the continent of Africa or other Black Americans?
I'm sure there are Black American's in Boise.
Yes. There are some black folks living in cities all over the state now in greater numbers than in the past. There was always quite a few who lived in Boise, Mtn. Home, and Pocatello; Pocatello was a railroad town, so there was a community of Pullman porters who lived there. Many of the NID cities had quite a few black mining families who lived in them as well.
Boise always had some of everything- logging, mining, railroad, and heavy industry, so it always had a black community as well.
While it's not well know, there were quite a few black cowboys who once worked on the cattle and sheep ranches that were scattered throughout the state. Idaho Falls has a couple of black families who first came as cowboys, and have been here for over 100 years now.
Montana has more, as Montana got a lot of Mexican cattle that came up from Texas for foundation breeding stock. The movie Lonesome Dove was a fictionalized account of events that were mostly true.
Many of the early cowboys were black or Irish or Italian immigrants fresh off the boats. Many stayed in the northwest after they arrived, because the land was free, and the black cowboys over time became homestead ranchers all over the region, from Nevada to eastern Oregon and Washington and all over Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming. Others stayed and went from ranch to ranch here for the rest of their lives as work hands.
I was going to mention Pocatello. You are correct, a huge railroad town back in the day, still pretty big with freight today. And when I lived there I did notice some older African Americans around town and they likely were descendants of the railway industry in the earlier part of the 20th century.
Elmore County has the highest percentage of black population in Idaho. It is home to the Mountain Home Air Force Base. Ada County, (Boise), is 2nd.
Elmore County which is adjacent to Ada County may have the highest percentage, but Boise and Ada County have the largest population in the state based on actual numbers.
