Just curious for those that have spent much time in CDA or McCall. Which has the harsher winter climate?

For reference, City Data says the following about elevation:

CdA: 2187 feet
McCall: 5031 feet

Obviously CdA being many miles North offsets this difference to some extent, but it looks like McCall is generally colder. I find it interesting how low the elevation is in Northern Idaho compared to other parts of the state. Not because I think its some sort of anomaly, but because I just sort of intuited it would be higher up.

McCall is a lot snowier than CDA, and also colder. The couple hundred miles difference in latitude is negligible compared to the elevation difference.

CDA snowfall 42"
Avg January high 35
Avg Low 22

McCall Snowfall 134"
Avg January High 30
Avg Low 11

We lived in CDA back in the 70’s.

My wife got a job offer in McCall. I told her she didn’t want to move to McCall. You can imagine the discussion that followed.

Anyway, we were coming back from the southwest in May and stopped in McCall so she could see the town and discuss the job.

May 10th, four feet of snow in town and the lake was still frozen over. Next morning, she called the office and said thanks, but no thanks. At the other end the question was “was it the frozen lake?”

McCall is a real cool town. I like it better than CDA by a long shot.

You better like winter, and you better like being isolated. There is nothing wrong with being isolated. These days it is much, much, much, easier to deal with than 40 years ago. I don’t think Highway 95 has been improved to any significant extent.

One big advantage to McCall over CDA is I think it is much sunnier. Check the weather statistics for this. If

I wish I could split myself in four without rules. I would live in SP, Priest Lake, McCall and Redfish.

This is the second weekend in a row it has snowed here in McCall! (first two weekends in June)

and to answer the question about the sun, yes McCall gets about a month more sun than CDA... although, it was pretty rough here in Jan/Feb this past year when it literally snowed every day for ~35 days with little to no sun.

Not so much. The altitude and lake effects make a lot of snow for McCall.

Snow can happen here any month of the year. When it snowed in McCall this month, we got snow too, but a day or two sooner and from a different weather pattern.

3-4", with flakes as big a silver dollars floating down. Then, 5 days later, it turned 91 here. That's an Idaho June for sure; wake up in the morning not knowing if you need to wear shorts or wooly underwear for the day.
