French trappers who worked for Hudson's Bay, the British/Canadian trading company.
The French were some of the first white people to explore the Intermountain West.

Some other French names in Idaho and nearby regions:
Malad- a city
Nez Perce- an Indian tribe, a county name
Tetons- a mountain range
Portneuf- a river
St. Anthony- a Catholic patron saint for the trappers
Dubois- a city in Idaho and another in Wyoming
Boise- another Idaho city
St. Maries- another patron saint

The French trappers were already established here before Lewis & Clark came. Sacagawea's husband was one.
