I'd like to start buying local produce in Pocatello.

I've tried these two things:

The farmer's market: The selection seemed limited and the prices there were quite a bit higher than I expected them to be. I double checked with several other people in the region (by which I mean northern UT, etc.), and they confirmed that those prices WERE quite high, even for a farmer's market.

The co-op: Its selection is also quite limited, and its emphasis seemed to be on organic produce, which is not as important to me as local produce. Much of it was shipped in from out of state and frankly, did not look that great.

Are there other options?

I knew this was going to be a quiet thread.

Every now and then, I take a trip back to the Puget Sound. Rest assured, when I do, I load up on the fresh produce and bring it back to Idaho in coolers and for a week or so, we live in bliss.

If we travel 60 miles to the northeast, we can get decent produce, but nothing compared to what I am used to. It seems to me that a good hydroponics operation could really clean up with fresh greens, tomatoes and strawberries, particularly in the southeastern part of the state.

There is not a lot of good options that I'm aware of. Though it is probably not local, the best quality and selection IMO is at Fred Meyer.

When I lived in Blackfoot more than 10 years ago, there was a farm called Shoemaker's (I think) where we'd buy corn, squash, pumpkin, and berries. It was on Washington Road in the Groveland area. Anyone know if they are still selling produce?

The farmer's market in Idaho Falls has a decent selection, and most of it seems to be local, though I did spot one stand selling strawberries that you could get at Fred Meyer's, Smith's, etc. As for the prices, they seemed reasonable, but that was compared to St. Louis, so I may not be the best judge when comparing to other regional sources.

Don't buy any apples, everyone here seems to have an apple tree or at least is related or knows someone who does. Have you been downtown to the co-op?

Are you asking me, or the OP? OP mentioned something about Poky's co-op in the first post, but I didn't know if IF had a co-op - if so, where is it located? Thanx!

Was asking you, but the OP might find the following link worthy as well. 368 A Street, Idaho Falls 529-6993 (http://www.eaglerockcoop.blogspot.com/ - broken link)
