Hello; thinking about an ISU position in Pocatello. This would mean a move from Florida. Couple of questions about the city: How are the schools (elementary, middle and high)? Also, a little confused on diversity from previous postings. We are a Jewish family; I saw one synagogue in Pocatello, are there more? Also we have one Muslim member, are there mosques or any Muslim community? We're not extremely religious, but the connection with community is important, and also if the whole town's activities revolves around church, that is something for us to consider. I was trying to get a feel for the town - liberal vs. conservative - and both came through the posts, so I don't know what to think. Also in terms of jobs; are there many in the IT sector? Last question; any specific neighborhoods to look at - would rent but would want to be able to buy in the neighborhood we rent in. Thanks for all the help!!

Wow, big question.. Pocatello is a bit of a conundrum. Many people want to categorize it and it is hard to categorize. Pocatello tends to be more diverse and liberal than then surrounding areas in Idaho probably mostly due to the influence of the university, but it is one of the most conservative states in the union, so you can find both here. Chubbuck and other areas farther from the university and center of town tend to be more conservative.

Pocatello not a bustling market for IT jobs but starting to take off. There are more employers and IT companies in Idaho Falls. ISU has been hiring quite a few IT position in the past few months.

I know of just one Jewish synagogue, and am not aware of any formal mosques though there are many Muslim students and faculty at the university. There are a lot of community activities and event and they definitely don't revolve around churches. There are many diverse activities to choose from.

Neighborhood depends a lot on what you are looking for and your price range. What things are the most important to you in a neighborhood? Proximity to work/school/etc? The University neighborhood was my favorite place to live, I've lived in several parts of Pocatello). I loved the tree lined streets, quiet and friendly neighbors, and everything I needed within walking distance, but there were not a lot of young kids for my kids to play with.
