We are going to be making a trip from NE Washington and all the way through Montana to look at Real Estate and hopefully purchase some land to build our retirement cabin/summer home.

We were pretty much sold on Montana because we absolutely LOVE the people there and the attitudes but have been convinced to give NE Washington and N. Idaho a chance and meet the people and look at the land. So we are.

The road trip begins July 26th.

Curious for any advice on places to stay in either CDA or Sandpoint? Which is a better place to find a hotel for an evening? Any reccomendations?

Thanks in advance. I look forward to seeing what N. Idaho and meeting the locals.

If you stay in Sandpoint, I suggest the Best Western Edgewater Resort. It sits right on city beach looking out on Lake Pend Oreille. Very charming place.

Sagle is a great place. It's a more gentrified spread out area than Sandpoint, with more families moving here (versus Sandpoint "city" with a declining school age population as more older folks move in or families stay but kids are grown).

There are some great view lots, but have corresponding difficult winter access up hilly roads. So keep in mind how often you may have to chain up your car just to get to your house in the winter months. If you're going to CDA, there is the resort of course. And other places around downtown/Sherman will be walking distance from everything. Alternative lodging in SP is the La Quinta right in the heart of town. But if you stay at the Edgewater, your 13yo will have the most fun since the beach is right outside your glass sliding doors. But it could be rough getting reservations there this late.

No matter where you stay I would get a reservation, as many places are booked up, especially on Friday, Sat. and Sunday.

One of the fun things to do in Sandpoint is take a lake cruise. http://www.lakependoreillecruises.com.
Doing the sunset cruise with wine and dessert and watching the bald eagles fish sold us quickly on this place.

Or head up to Schweitzer and do a chairlift ride. From the top, the view of the lake is breathtaking. Hike the Green Monarchs. Kayak Sand Creek. Hang out with the family and swim at City Beach. You'll love it here.
