Walking out of the grocery store, late evening, down to the last cashier, lobby / exits are empty, you spot a small wad of bills on the floor 20 feet from the register ($5 on the outside). Does it go in your pocket?.........
or do you go give it to the clerk?

I'd give it back and I've been an Idahoan nearly 20 years prior to that I was a Californian. I was at a casino once, saw a roll of nickels sitting next to a machine and when to the cashier's cage with it. They cashier looked at me like I fell straight from the idiot tree and told me to enjoy it.
I was raised that if it's not yours then do right by it.
Last Christmas I was taking a walk in another state. Next to a car on the street, I found 8 20.00 bills laying on the snowy street. Initially I went new tool, oh boy. Then the old conscious hit. I knocked on the nearest front door. The guy who answered it had just got back from overseas. We walked back up to the street together and we also found his wallet. Yeah, I could have taken the money, but It wouldn't have been worth the guilt. Forest trail, no one around, go for it. Who are you going to give it back, to the deer?

In this case I would turn it in. If I was walking behind Bill Gates and wads of hundreds starting falling out of his pocket they would go directly into mine. Not because he is rich, but because of all the hours I have logged staring at the blue screen of death.
Not so obvious. If I know and trust the cashier and it is obvious it was dropped from the store's customer, then I give back. If money is in the gutter and not associated with any store, then it depends on amount. A few bucks? Perhaps I give it to my kid. If alot, I may post an ad and let each store in the vicinity know.
Went on vacation this summer. On the beach, I found a ring--an old one--with a date 100+ years ago. "Cool" was soon replaced by sadness of someone losing such a precious keepsake. What did I do? I asked about 100 people within a 50' radius. No go. Once home, I posted in two local forums and emailed the police. Ring is still with me--I consider myself a temporary guardian. Nothing yet. But who knows? Maybe the ring was lost 100 years ago! There certainly was some dullness due to time in the sand and surf.
I would like to think I am a moral person, but no saint. Giving cash to someone else may not actually solve anything, as then I would feel terrible if the cashier pocketed the $$.
I am considering that by the narrative you gave, it is more than likely belongs to a patron of the store. That being said:
I would give it to the manager with specific instructions that if it went unclaimed within (X) amount of time, I would be allowed to claim it as mine. If it went unclaimed, I would find the first homeless person, and give it to them. Or for that matter, if I saw a patron who might not be able to pay for items in their cart, help them out.
If it belonged to the store, then most certainly leave it with the manager.
