Our View: Another loss for Otter, but a big win for Idahoans | Editorial | Idaho Statesman (http://www.idahostatesman.com/editorial/story/1068730.html - broken link)
Volunteerism is at least part of an acceptable approach from my standpoint. I currently live near the Appalachian Trail in Virginia. There is a hiking club that trains volunteers who then agree to maintain a small portion of the main trial, or any of the multitude of side trails nearby. I have seen groups of kids, families, and individuals as old as 80+ all doing this volunteering. I personally have spent time removing invasive weed species from various areas of particular concern, under training and supervision of park rangers.
If I end up living close enough to a park in ID, I certainly would be willing to pitch in. There are often many beneficial unintended consequences of like minded people coming together for a common cause. Even if I live farther away from parks I can still volunteer during what would be less frequent visits. I would hate to see this start a trend with no end in layoffs and continued increased expectations from volunteers, but it certainly can be a small part of the solution while times are tough.
Small fee hike in conjunction with a strong volunteer program would probably work. Closure is not a solution. That is what lazy people do.
I guess thats why one of the first things they wanted to do in Cali was close the parks...LOL.. I say charge them TRIPLE to use Idaho parks!!
Well, now that Im HERE!!!
I'd be down for some volunteering.. I already pick up garbage left behind by A-holes in certain area's around the park here...
I think using the Boy Scouts etc., might work. We did a lot of volunteer work in my scout troop.
