Did you see this story? A body has been brought up from the bottom of Priest Lake where it has been for apparently 50-100 years. There's a sunken boat nearby which may be a connection, but they haven't established that yet. Forensic research is ongoing, to establish his/her identity. Sgt. Johnson from the Bonner Ct Sheriff's Office says they're looking for potential relatives, and already being contacted by locals.

Remains at lake bottom yield identity mystery - Spokesman.com - May 21, 2010

I don't know if you feel the tug of this story, too, but being a NW history buff it really intrigues me: imagine someone being lost at the bottom of the lake for so many years, with (perhaps) loved ones wondering what happened, and now finally, perhaps, being identified and "coming home." What is the story of that unknown NID person who met his or her fate on the lake? Drowning during a storm, on the way to what they thought would be the rest of their life? Or something else entirely? Maybe we'll know...maybe it'll turn out to be a story somebody ought to write a ballad about...

Here's a follow-up on the story. They're still looking for locals who may have lost a family member in the area years ago, so they haven't identified the body yet. But they do have a list of people who are known to have drowned in Priest Lake and are still missing :

I think they also found one about ten years ago that was dressed in clothes from the 1850's, the body started desentigrating before they could do DNA testing on it.

That would put that person in the period of the early Idaho missionaries (de Smet supposedly came to Priest Lake as the first white person in 1846)! That's fascinating. I'll see if I can come up with some research. In the meantime, here's a website about Priest Lake history. Still no news about the body found in May.

Please see my site SILVIA PETTEM: PRIEST LAKE for more information. DNA comparisons have not yet been made, and information on families is still being collected.

I KNEW the water in Priest River tasted funny!

There oughta be a law. No drowning allowed in Priest Lake, unless you're wearing clean socks!

So have you been wondering about the body in Priest Lake, from time to time? Well, you'll have to keep wondering: DNA testing yielded no result, and the submerged boat provided no clues, so they still don't know who that poor soul was.

Remains yield no human DNA - Bonner County Daily Bee: Local News: sandpoint idaho, sandpoint, priest lake, bonner county sheriff, bonner county sheriff's office

Silvia (above) also has the story, with a comment:
