Immigration facts, figures — and thoughts - latimes.com

Over half a million arrests a year and people like this columnist think we should "stand down".

Nothing to see here people, we've gotten the invasion down to half a million a year.

A total decline of 1 mil and they think the problem is gone?

Seriously?

Yes, the author is certainly an idiot or just ignorant to what is really going on and what matters to the people. It's always amazing at some of the things that irresponsible journalists will write about illegal immigration and any other political or social issue. Here's one of his dumb quotes:

Quote:
So, in the face of all this data showing that legal and illegal immigration is down dramatically, what's all the fuss about? Why has the debate turned so nasty? Why does it seem worse than it did in 1994, during the debate over Proposition 187, California's anti-immigrant ballot measure?
Geez, I don't know, maybe things turned nasty as the amount of undocumented immigrants here in the US grew since that 1994 date. Maybe that combined with their usage of resources is pissing people off and making them "fuss." Or that those illegal immigrants from those times have given birth in the US to millions of children. How can some of these people look at things so black-and-white?

I agree, "It's the LA Times, what do you expect." I can't take the LA Times seriously on this topic.

We have in deed found a fix. Follow Az's example and enforce the law. They will flee to their country of origin and the problem is solved.

The part that is really lame is the 156 or so other news paper sites that copied it and published like they published it themselves.

But not before they escape to other states, like Pennsylvania. Have you been to the York area? We're being invaded

The sheer numbers of illegals had a lot to do with it. People might have sympathy when a handful of people make it over the border to work hard in menial jobs but when millions come and keep on coming with no end in sight and Americans are told they had better start learning Spanish and accept that all financial aid will go to children of illegals because the illegals don't honestly report their income since so much of it's under the table and Americans find themselves unemployed with millions of people still pouring over the border and they see the welfare offices filling up but not with Americans - yes opinions begin to change.

A lot of it has to do with the arrogance of the illegals, their belief that no laws apply to them, plans like the Dream Act which reward those who come here illegally with free college tuition and citizenship while other foreign students pay extra and of course the marching around with their Mexican flags demanding unlimited immigration by their raza, insisting they are only here to take the lands of the USA for their raza opened many eyes.

500 thousand a year is still way to many. And that is if that number is even true, they are illegal afterall are they not ? They hop the border and go undetected...So 500k is a minimum ESTIMATE of how many border hop each year. For all we know the real number may be 2 million a year, who knows and how can we know ? They are by definition undocumented/ghosts/not counted/unknowns in our system and census.

Its the same thing as the Government's official quote on the number of illegals in the country. The Feds say we have 12-20 million here, but of course they have been saying there are 12-20 million illegals in the country since 2001. In other words they dont know what they are talking about. Since it is not rocket science to know that illegals did not stop pouring in after 2001...Im sure the real number of illegals is 20 million to 30 million now.

Also...Has anyone else wondered about the massive security risk with our lack of a border ? The hypocrisy is just insane when you think about it. After 9/11 we ramped up airport security and boat docking security to the maximum to keep any potential terrorist out [it still takes a long time to go through our airport system]...Yet down south along our 2000 mile long border, ANYONE can easily hop a non existant fence and be on they're way in America. For all we know our next set of Terrorists are already present in America via our excellent border security system on the southern border [haha].
