BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – Alabama's new immigration law is brewing a storm of controversy. One thing both sides agree on: this is the broadest and strictest law in the country.
La Gracia in Center Point is the only Spanish speaking Episcopal Church in the area. But, there's a new fear in the congregation.
Rev. Dr. Hernan Afanador says, “There is a lot of fear in the people, the Hispanics and the Mexicans, they don't want to be deported by the immigration authorities.
The reverend says on any given Sunday church attendance was at about 100 members, however ever since the immigration legislation was introduced, that number has drastically declined.
“They are really afraid because before the law there were about 100 people coming to service, now only 15,” Afanador says.
Hmm, does that give us a true picture of just how many Hispanics are in this country legally vs illegally? Out of 100 Hispanics only 15 would return to church because of the new immigration law.

What are those parasitic criminals who are a scourge on our society doing at church?!
/sarcasm
If the church is Catholic (or any off shoot) it has got
to operate with "cannon law" in place. That means
they must help anyone that will ask for help.
They probably get food baskets, rides to the welfare
offices, ect, ect. Ever wonder why every illegal hides
in or around a Roman Catholic church ? It's because
the preist must help.

The church is not obligated to aid and abet lawbreakers by shielding them from the law according to the Bible.
Wow, this thread is amazing. We go from a report of people leaving ONE CHURCH and somehow go from that to
* "4 out of 5 Hispanics and Mexicans" are illegals? Wow, extrapolation fail.
* "every illegal hides in or around a Roman Catholic church" (lolwut)
* feeding human beings = "corrupt".
But most of all, I really, really love the "concerened with money & power but no respect for the law" line. Yes, the church is feeding poor people OUT OF GREED. You heard it here first!
You people ever get that "feeling" when you see a police car on the freeway even though you know you did nothing wrong and were not speeding. Yeah think again. Even here legally with work permits and valid resident alien cards, being afraid of contact with law enforcement is cultural and lots of time justified.
That being said Im glad to see these laws having the desired affect of making illegal aliens think twice about coming or staying in the U.S.
Plus or federal immigration system is a joke and needs to make it easier for businesses to get legal low cost labor from south of the border.
