I'm not up on the current laws regarding how people can move here and become legal citizens. In the old days people came here from other countries, filled out the paperwork and became legal citizens...right? What is different now? Is the process so different? What are the reasons people won't go through with the legal process? In other words, why do people remain illegal? Or, maybe you have a link to the nuts and bolts of the issue? Please and thank you.

Over a million people come here legally every year, most from Mexico.
There are a number of ways that people can come here legally, many types of visas.
The one problem I can see is that legal immigration is far too heavily slanted toward family sponsorship which allows those who attained legal status to start some family chain immigration process, all it takes is to have some relative living here legally and the whole family can be brought in, and the family sponsors don't have to provide health insurance policies or follow through with any financial obligation for their immigrants. Many family sponsored immigrants never work here and end up on SSI and food stamps.
There needs to be reform but it should be to downsize the numbers coming through family sponsorhip and increase the numbers coming on work visas.
Work visas should reflect our unemployment rates, when many millions Americans are unemployed or on welfare programs, obviously we need less imported labor.
The reason so many come illegally is that it's easy, they are being promised the quick path to citizenship, including their place in the financial aid lines of colleges, their place obviously will be the front of those lines.
They come illegally because they are almost never deported for doing so, they are almost never prosecuted for committing felony document fraud or driving without licenses and insurance.
And also those who prefer to employ illegals are almost never prosecuted for doing so, why would they go through the steps to bring in legal workers with work visas when they can bring in semi-trailer loads and box cars of much cheaper illegals, knowing nothing will ever be done about them doing so.
By hiring illegals, they don't have to pay into taxes on their workers, they don't have to provide workman's comp, health insurance benefits, pay overtime or legal wages.

Malamute nailed it. If you’re interested in our legal immigration process, visit the USCIS website. But, due to unabated massive illegal immigration, we are now in a crisis situation. Consequently, we are currently overbooked. So, I would suggest waiting until we have resolved this issue.

Of course, what you don't mention is that most people can't use ANY of those ways to come here legally.

Simplistic plans like this are shortsighted since jobs aren't fungible.

Who is being promised a quick path to citizenship via coming here illegally?

This is total baloney. Anyone who is willing to not pay all that stuff could also pay US citizens under the table just as well.
And if people are actually doing this to illegals, why do all the illegals need to commit ID fraud to get bogus SSNs etc? Just for the fun of it?
The FACTS are that illegals make more than minimum wage, they have taxes withheld just like everyone else, their employers fund everything that they're supposed to (this is why the employers aren't prosecuted, they're FOLLOWING THE LAW!).
Summary: your post is a big pile of self-contradicting propaganda meant to scare people.

Your statement is an oxymoron....
Illegal aliens cannot legally be employed in America (nor in any other civilized country in the world).....
With you quoting FACTS it'll be very easy for you to post the URL of the governments website that shows IT'S LEGAL TO HIRE ILLEGAL ALIENS.
We await your next FACTUAL post with baited breath.....
Coming here and/or living here legally is a priviledge. NOT A RIGHT.
Because there is empirical evidence that shows that our immigration process is preventing many people from becoming legal members of our society who would be/ already are productive members of our society.
