The "Show Me" state has once again shown us how it should be done. There needs to be more publicity and exposure regarding what Missouri has done.
• In 2007, Missouri placed on the ballot a proposed constitutional amendment designating English as the official language of Missouri.
• In 2008, a measure was passed that required the Missouri Highway Patrol to verify the immigration status of any person arrested.
• In Missouri, illegal immigrants do NOT have access to taxpayers' benefits such as food stamps and health care through Missouri HealthNET.
• In 2009, a measure was passed that ensures Missouri's public institutions of higher education do NOT award financial aid to individuals who are illegally in the United States.
So while Arizona has made national news for its new law, it’s important to remember Missouri has been proactive in addressing this growing problem. The laws we have on the books help ensure the rights and benefits of Missourians are preserved for actual Missouri citizens. It’s also important to remember that this country has always opened its arms to immigrants, which is why our nation is often referred to as the great melting pot. Immigrants from all parts of the world have helped make our country what it is today. However, our doors are not open to those who try to live in our country illegally. I believe Missouri’s laws make that very clear and give our law enforcement officials the authority they need to deal with the problem.
I got several things from the Fox News 12/15/2011 Presidential Debate.
Megyn Kelley's question on immigration cited a poll claiming that 61% of voters support a path to citizenship for illegal aliens in the US. The path to legal status or deportation question is an attempt to force Republicans into believing the impossible or amnesty lite. This gotcha question, which has been asked many times before, has a simple answer; Attrition and Enforcement, which I doubt was an option in the poll. Missouri has proven that cutting off welfare, allowing the police to enforce immigration law the same way they enforce other federal law, and other immigration reform efforts force illegal aliens to leave. Adding deportations to this on a federal level, would force millions of illegal aliens to leave in a short period of time.
As warm and fuzzy as that all sounds I can assure you that Missouri does indeed still have problems with illegal immigration.
Clue: Interstate 35, Interstate 29, Interstate 70. We are the midway point on the North American Union superhighway. Kansas City Missouri is a "defacto" sanctuary city. Missouri has major meatpacking plants and mega-corporate pork & fowl producers.
1) English is not the official language of Missouri. Government documents are available in a wide variety of languages. The amendment only stated that public meetings must be conducted in English (translators are made available upon request).
2) This only applies to anyone who is not eligible for bond. Anyone eligible for bond has to be released without their status being checked.
3) This is the same bill as in (2). It was strongly watered down by the time it passed. All -children- of illegal aliens still get full benefits, and illegal aliens expressly cannot be denied access to healthcare, food stamps, or legal counsel.
4) The measure passed the House, where it has passed every year for the last 5 years, but not the Senate. A much watered down version was passed in 2009 that only requires the schools to certify that they are not "knowingly" providing financial aid to an illegal alien, but they are not required to validate any proof submitted by a student (and considering that any state-issued ID, regardless of state, is considered valid proof, without validation the law is useless).

Epic fail. Good try Missouri. All of these things are easily avoidable for an illegal.
The main reason Missouri has a low illegal alien population, incidentally, is because it has a low legal Hispanic population. Believe it or not, many illegals live with legal family members, especially once you get outside the border states. With few Hispanic communities, and few Hispanic family connections, illegals simply do not come to this state.
