The drop recorded in the last three months of 2011 may reflect the Obama administration's plan to focus its deportation efforts by weighing a variety of discretionary factors, including whether the person is a veteran, came to the U.S. as a child or is a college student, according to the report. But experts said it's too soon to say if deportations overall will decline.
Perhaps someone can explain why veteran status should be included among discretionary factors. According to our current law, one must have a legal presence to qualify for military enlistment. If an illegal is a veteran, he/she would have had to enlist under fraudulent/criminal circumstances by declaring legal status (a lie under penalty of perjury), stealing the SSN and identity of a citizen or legal resident (ID theft), or using a fake SSN (fraud). Why on earth should these criminals even be considered for a reprieve?

I'd like to know how an illegal alien can join our military also. According to our laws they aren't eligible to join.

Apparently this will be another law ignored to accommodate illegals. I can hear it now, "Well, they only resorted to lies, theft and deception to serve the country they love. They deserve legalization and a path to citizenship."
Let a citizen lie to the military, and see what "reward" they get.

Yep, if they are going to be forgiven for lying to gain employment in our country they certainly will be forgiven for enlisting in our military under false pretenses also. In fact as you said, it will be considered to be an honorable intent on their part even if they had some cushey stateside job and never saw combat.
Now illegals pretty much have to have committed some horrendous crime to be deportable.
And what's worse, all they have to do is claim some kind of victim status and they're home free with the U visa. On a radio show for illegals, a pro-illegal immigration lawyer will suggest ways they can claim victim status. Get caught with drugs, and they can claim the drugs were planted on them, and that gets them a U visa because they would be victims of a crime.
Obama deported in record numbers up until DHS announced its selective removal process, for which those numbers have now fallen since Q3-11 by 1/3. Thus his records are now falling. Nothing but politics by him now. See, I stopped the deportations of many of your illegal family members/brethren, so vote for me as the Republicans want to send all of you back.
The OP states that deportation cases are down by 1/3, I reiterated it and showed the portion within the article that proves my point, you come in with some claim that has absolutely nothing to do with the discussion.
He is not keeping with the same number of deportations as they are down, even your numbers show that. Me incorrect, hardly. .......
In fact, here is the TRAC document proving the article and my point correct. http://trac.syr.edu/whatsnew/email.120221.html
Quote:
Sharp Decline in ICE Deportation Filings(21 Feb 2012) The number of deportation proceedings initiated during October to December 2011 by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in the nation's 50-plus Immigration Courts fell sharply to only 39,331 -- down 33 percent from 58,639 filings recorded the previous quarter. Filings are typically lower at this time of year, but even adjusting for this seasonal drop off and for late reporting, there appear to have been over 10,000 fewer deportation filings than would have been expected last quarter. Even with fewer filings there is little evidence that these cases are being better targeted toward serious criminals.
