I can't help but notice, being a major hockey fan and all, that players from all around the globe who come to the NHL from all parts of the world can speak half decent English in less than 2 years in the league.....

Yet IA's who have been in this country for 5, 10, 15, and in some cases, over 20 years, can't speak a lick of English (and there are millions of them). Do Mexican school children not have mandatory English classes in grammar school like every other developed country in the world does? Do mexican parents who deliver anchor babies in this country have no desire to learn the basics that their offspring are required to learn at the expense of the U.S. taxpayers?

Just wondering......

Maybe if they showed a little more interest in assimilation, attitudes towards them might get much better.

Educated Mexicans very often learn at least some English in their schools but illegals tend to be the illiterate types who cannot make it in their own country even with a much lower cost of living there.

Generally we get the 3rd grade drop outs, many illegals never stepped foot in a school at all even though school attendance is mandatory in Mexico.

Those who become educated in Mexico aren't the ones who have to be smuggled over the border, Mexico's middle class is growing, unlike ours which is shrinking.

Even with this being the case, how can anyone live in this country 5+ years and not be able to speak a word of English? You literally have to go out of your way not to learn!

This is a disgusting embarrassment, and Mexico laughs at us daily for encouraging this nonsense.

Complete lack of even intellectual curiosity. They have no desire to speak with Americans, no need to do so, they pretty much want to live just like they did back home only with all the USA government programs like Medicaid which pays 100% of their health care costs.

Back home they would live like poor Mexicans and working for a living would not just be an option. Here they live like rich Mexicans whether they work or don't. They have all their same novelas, same kinds of stores that cater them in Spanish. It's really not so different from being in their own country only the money is so much easier. Here if they have kids they can't afford they're paid food stamps, WIC, free housing and much much more, back home if they have kids they have a life of hard work ahead of them.

Yet we English speaking Americans get criticized for not learning Spanish in our own English speaking country. Hypocricy, anyone?

I believe one of the posters over here stated that Mexicans start learning some English in high school. Which is rather ironic as my kids are learning Spanish in elementary school.

I think much of frustration with illegals would vanish if they would follow a few simple rules. In the first place they should do everything they can to learn fluent English BEFORE they get here and practice it as much as possible once here. In the second they should avoid engaging in socially destructive practices like having babies at a young age and dropping out of high school.

For all the "your grandparents" arguments made by the pro-illegals they forget a few facts. Most of our ancestors immigrated before the welfare system was in place. So they had no safety nets. If they couldn't make it here financially they went home. It was most certainly not give birth and have the government pay for the birth and then feed you and the baby. It was also not show up in the middle of a recession become a lawyer when we already have enough of them and then whine that we ask you to leave. It was shut the doors during the recession.

Illegals need to get it through their thick heads. They need to win us over. The way to do that is not with calling us racists, demanding we learn Spanish and making nasty accusations against our family members.

They need to be humble English speakers who admit to doing something awful, do not expect to be rewarded for it, show contrition and let us decide what to do with them.

What is the need for that, really? We cater to their every whim, from education needs, to medical emergencies, to bilingual human service workers who determine their welfare benefits... and the list goes on and on. They have so many resources and safety nets at their disposal that there is absolutely no need to go out of their way and try to better themselves with a such a trite and worthless task as learning the language of the country that embraces their very being.

While I agree with every single word you have stated, your scenario will never happen. The future of America was decided in 1986 when the last amnesty occurred and the flood gates were deliberately left wide open. Every time you do business in this country (particuarly by phone) it is not by coincidence but by design that everything is automatically repeated in spanish and no other language option button is available.

By doing so, those in power targeted the audience that they wanted to entice here by the millions by making it easy for them to function in our society with very little money or discomfort. It is not by accident that we the taxpayers foot the bill for everything else that they and their multitude of children need. The enclaves in which they live is not by accident but by design.

Same can be said with signs located just about anywhere, but most concentrated in places like human service offices and hospitals. I mean, where are the signs printed in German, French, Italian, Mandarin, Polish, Russian, Portugeuse, ect...? We have immigrants here from all those countries, yet no one caters to their needs when it comes to the language issue.

IA sympathizers know this and every post they put up is simply designed to dilute and/or deflect the facts that are so very evident to any rational person. Sadly, even if the floodgates open wide and they are given everything they want, the fact remains that they will still have no intention to learn the language and assimilate like other cultures do when arriving in the U.S. The goal for them has never been to blend in.
