In Douglas, Ariz., the fire chief, Mario Novoa, estimated that about 15 percent of the department’s calls came from the port of entry.

Firefighters also offer medical assistance to people the Border Patrol finds in the desert, more than 25 miles outside the city limits.

Chief Novoa called the collection rate on trips associated with the border “dismal” and “a burden on the taxpayers.”

Not all calls from the border involve medical emergencies. In the area around Calexico, many citizens who moved to Mexico after the economic crisis of 2008 in search of a lower cost of living return to the United States for medical care, firefighters said, often calling 911 to get to the hospital. Others, tired of waiting in line at the port of entry, where the sun is a hammer, use the ambulance like a taxi to get across the border more quickly.

It's time for the US to stop being a willing victim to the schemes and abuse of these losers who perpetually take advantage of America's services and generosity.

"Citizens" in that their mothers come over to the USA to give birth, and often they are dual citizens, just raking in what they can on either side of the border. In Mexico they can better enjoy their culture, be around their friends and family, and of course everything in Mexico is very cheap. Health care in Mexico is much more affordable in Mexico -- if you plan to pay for any of your health care, but if you want completely free health care, then you cross the border to the USA for that.

Same with schools, Mexico has free public schools but not the two free meals and free books and iPads that the USA gives them. So you commute to the USA schools where you will be handed a nice new iPad or lap top computer that your whole family will enjoy.

You'll see many ambulances coming over from Mexico is you check out the legal ports of entry.

That makes two of us. Most poor people tend to be humble but these people? Their arrogance, selfishness and sense of entitltement knows no bounds. I just cannot understand where that part of their delusions of grandier stems from.

Douglas is a small Arizona town right on the border, and would have almost all of its economy (legal and illegal) based on cross-border trade. Several years ago the entire Port of Entry staff was replaced because of rampant corruption. Without the Port of Entry, for good, bad, or otherwise, Douglas would have dried up and blown away like a tumbleweed so many years ago.
