I see, so because English isn't our "official" language but it is our de facto national language immigrants shouldn't have to learn it?
The premise that U.S. citizens or legal immigrants must know English is false. It doesn't matter if we have one particular language or another as primary. There is no requirement for a U.S. citizen or Legal Permanent Resident to know English to remain in that status.
Yeah sure. Do what you want to do then but don't expect other Americans to follow suit. It is a personal choice and Americans shouldn't be called lazy or stupid just because they don't want to learn another langauge that they will never use.
And yet we have "malamute" calling an old woman "too stupid or senile" for not learning another language after age 79:

I don't think thats a terrible idea but it really wouldn't benefit us a whole lot.
That's the irony. Americans have always been criticized for having a common language and not having 100 plus languages and dialects --- yet we became the richest most productive nation ever on the planet.
There are those who don't see the irony is so many millions impoverished fleeing the Spanish speaking nations who come here and then insist we become just another Spanish speaking nation like the one they just fled -- and like the ones they would never consider immigrating into.

Not all 79 year olds are past the point of learning -- it's a myth that no one over a certain age can learn.
Seriously what's the point in bringing over people who ARE too old to learn or adapt? Yes - free health care, free housing, food stamps have their appeal -- obviously a 79 year old beyond the ability to learn anything is not coming here to work hard for a living, they're coming here for the government handouts.
Then why are the schools along the border in such bad shape? Very very low SAT scores among the Spanish speaking and ESL's would indicate it's not so wonderful for the brain.

You expect 79 year olds to work hard for a living?
Scientists have come up with yet more evidence to suggest that keeping the brain active can ward off senile dementia.
Researchers in the United States have found that dancing, playing musical instruments, reading and playing board games can all reduce the risks of developing the condition.
The findings back up previous studies which have suggested that doing crosswords or learning a new language have a similar protective effect. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/3006130.stm
