Puerto Rico Gov. Alejandro García Padilla on Wednesday signed legislation that allows immigrants living in the U.S. territory illegally to obtain a temporary driver’s license.“This law is a measure of justice for our immigrant brothers as well as a guarantee of better safety for all drivers on our roadways,” the governor said. “Our commitment is to eliminate all types of discrimination and steer a just government that promotes equality through its actions.”
Typical clueless Democrat.
The article goes on to mention that Puerto Rico now joins several other US entities that allow illegal immigrants the right to obtain some form of driver's license. New Mexico and Washington allow them full licenses while Utah grants them special license that cannot be used for ID purposes.
The Puerto Rico Dept. of Transportation however states that the licenses will "look different" and they will specifically state NOT A US CITIZEN which satisfies my concern that the illegals would be able to masquerade as American citizens by claiming to be from Puerto Rico. They will also be unable to vote as the Puerto Rico State Elections Commission restricts voting to US citizens and mandates voter ID.
All in all though this is a bad move, it is basically inviting illegal immigrants to go to Puerto Rico and steal jobs - on an island which already has the highest unemployment rate in the United States.
"Immigrant" brothers? It's discrimination not to allow DL to illegal aliens in PR? Equality? Since when should illegal aliens be equal to citizens?
Sounds like they are behaving just like the clueless idiots in some of our state governments.
Even more ironic, Garcia Padilla is pro-territory (colony) yet is talking about equality!
Democrats live in a bizarre fantasy world ... Elliot Spitzer used many of the same arguments when he tried to get NY to grant driver's licenses to illegal immigrants in 2007 - fortunately the mass outrage led him to drop the proposal.
Independence is regularly and consistently rejected by over 90% of voters. They are Americans, yes they may have brown skin and yes they speak Spanish as a first language but they are born as American as someone from Texas or Nebraska.

And how does that justify them handing out drivers licenses to those who have no respect for American laws? It sounds like they have little respect for the USA also --- but --- maybe illegals should all go to Puerto Rico -- let the illegals have it.

Any particular reason that you would mention their skin color and what language they speak? I really don't think it is relevant. I just wish they would **** or get off the pot. Either you are fully one of us or you are not.
I just don't get it WHY PR even wants to give ANY illegal alien there ID's. I'd think the locals there would be madder than hell since PR ain't exactly rich.

Multiple states of the Union grant driver's licenses to illegal immigrants - New Mexico, Washington, Utah, etc - should we get rid of them too?

They rejected the current territorial status by 54% and voted for statehood as the preferred non-territorial status option by 61% last November: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puerto_Rican_status_referendum,_2012#Results
