This article is heartrending.

I didn't read the entire article. Yes, it is sad. And, yes, this has been going on for years. Doing something illegally, no matter what it is, has its risks and consequences.

Why not ask the families of the victims to contribute? Wouldn't that be a fair solution? Why are American taxpayers always asked to pay for everything? These runners obviously had enough money to pay a coyote. If their families truly want peace, let THEM pay for it, not the poor taxpayers of Brooks Cty.

I didn't bother to read the article.
I will state the obvious....
if they would have stayed in their country of origin, they would still be alive.
If they would have migrated to the US legally, they would still be alive.

Agreed. If I tried to cross INTO Mexico illegally and got killed by either a Mexican cop or a drug cartel member, it'd suck to be me.

I know many people who made this trip illegally.

They thought once they crossed the border is was just an hour or, less to the big cities......I know that sounds ridicules to us.......they just do not understand the size of the USA or, the vast desert they will cross.

We are NOT at war - except to stem the tide of illegals. Therefore this:

They are forensics specialists who say the dead should be identified, just as nations are expected to identify soldiers who die during wars.
is total bs. It is not a war. People get lost in the desert and die - it's their choice. They choose to break the law, they bear the consequences.

RE "Santos" he made poor choices and paid for them. No sympathy, there, either. Sorry. He shouldn't have left the US w/o the appropriate documents, he shouldn't have fathered three children in four years on his return to El Salvador - further evidence of more irresponsibility and perpetuation of more poverty - he shouldn't have tried to come back without papers. A series of poor choices/poor planning. Consequences pretty much predetermined.

You nailed it, the victims families should pay.
