A Hispanic country; which was a pariah from 1939-1975 built itself from essentially a Third World cesspool to a solid First World nation with a Scandinavian way of social welfare has received as its reward unfettered access to the EU.
Immigration should be limited to those people who truly wish to become American -- who have the ability and the desire to learn the language and the traditions of this country.
If it's only for money -- and they prefer their own flag and government then they need to stay home -- and their spot can be filled by someone who wishes to be an American.
And many Mexicans who come here illegally do wish to become true Americans. This is why the "path to legalization" is what I see as an opportunity to recognize the "sincere" ones from the "I want to take over your country, eat your food, and rape your children" kind. This is why the mayor's move to do this is a good thing in my eyes.

And immigration should not be only for Mexicans, it must be fair and impartial. We should not be bringing in more Mexicans than other groups -- we need much more balance and a less racist immigration policy. That means family chain migration should be cut back and immigrants brought in for their desire to fit in and for what they can contribute to this country.
Immigration is not only for Mexicans, I'm not sure where you got that idea. The only reason we SEE more Mexicans is because you see, we have this country that is very near us called MEXICO. Naturally, we'd see more people from that country rather than , say, South Africa. Because you see, its a wee bit harder for South Africans to hop over the ocean to emigrate here illegally than it would be for a Mexican to hop a fence.
Here in Arizona; that Mexican flag in the context of its usage was a slap in the face of us who are American--------of any race/ethnicity.
One never uses a foreign flag in a protest--------if a bunch of Americans flew Old Glory in a protest SOB; the Mexican people would have every right to be offended.
That is still irrelevant to the topic of providing a path to legalization for those unfortunate illegals who are wishing to assimilate, which is the main topic of this thread.

They have a legal path already available -- and so do their employers. They can return to their home country as long as they have clean record and apply for legal immigration --- just like so many legal immigrants do. And as I said -- the USA takes in far far more legal immigrants than does any other country on this planet.
The naturalization process for my parents and I was long and gruesome. Unless you've done anything in terms of changing your citizenship/legal status in another country, I really don't think you have a right to say "well they already have an option." Sometimes what seems like an option really, quite frankly, is not.

And -- the money saved by shipping them back to their own country is well spent because virtually none of these illegals pays their own health care costs and are tax-payer subsidized for food and fuel and housing.
The cannot help a recession -- if they could help an economy their own country would want them back and Fox and Calderon both panic over the thought of them returning. The extremely high illegitimacy rate and drop out rate are evidence of what they will do for a country.
Do we want all our cities looking like the sprawling slums of Mexico City?
You recognize how Mexico City is a slum and yet somehow you assume the Mexicans want to go back there? Even if they were productive, economy-stimulating citizens, I doubt they'd want to go back there! You make sweeping statements about how ALL Mexicans are healthcare-draining, no good freeloaders which is a huge mistake because as I have stated many many times already in this thread: there are those who came illegally from lack of better judgment but only hoping to become American and have the American life. To make them do the things and take the steps to do that, imho, is not such a travesty.
Everything you stated as reasons to counter the "path to legalization" I've already addressed:
"Being rewarded for having broken laws and moving to the front of the line"--not necessarily the case here because they are not being rewarded, just given a chance to redeem themselves by taking steps to becoming legalized. The process should not at all guarantee legalization, as in there will be those that fail (just as those who try to become naturalized citizens). Instead, the path to legalization will simply be a step to given the sincere, productive illegals a chance to prove they are willing to do things the legal way and pay taxes into the system rather than drain money out of the system.
Which leads me to my second rebuttal--
"Signs of recession coming"--which is why we should spend less tax dollars and not to mention ever-expensive gasoline trucking illegals back across the border and get something out of them. By having them become legal citizens, they'd be paying back into the system with their tax dollars--which in turn should help the recession.
Thus, money will actually be restored, rather than lost with the "path to legalization" process.
Illegal aliens are overwhelmingly poorly educated and unskilled. The small amount they will pay in taxes will not offset the cost of the services they use as citizens. American immigration policy must be structured so that it benefits America, just as Canadian immigration policy must benefit the citizens of Canada. This is common sense. I doubt that any country can labor forever under the burden of ever increasing millions who are a net cost to society. The people who come here legally are carefully screened to make sure that they will not become a public charge. Our legal immigration system works. The immigrants who come here are motivated to become Americans and they contribute a great deal to our society. What you are proposing involves importing a whole new underclass and I fail to see how the average citizen will benefit from that. The illegal aliens need to return to their home countries and use their new found skills as activists to lobby for change there.
I'm arguing against massive uncontrolled immigration -- that's right. We do not need to bring in billions of impoverished people just to keep the big corporations and the elitists happy.
Do we want a population growth rate that's out-of-control with most babies being born to very young unwed teens? Do we want to have the problems of Mexico with a very very rapid population growth that cannot be provided jobs?
Now you're just pulling at straws and relating babies born out of wedlock to illegal Mexicans. As I stated in another thread, the social problems we experience from Mexicans are equal to the caliber of social problems we experience from our own trailer trash citizens. To put such issues solely on the shoulders of illegals is both uneducated and unfair.

First step: respect the laws of this country to prove you really wish to become an American. They can prove that by going home and starting over the right way this time.
That will also require they find an employer sponsor -- someone who also wishes to do things the legal and right way. A sponsor who will actually take some financial responsibility for them -- not just some crook looking for the cheapest possible labor.
Immigration including legal immigration is far too heavily slanted to Mexico. We do not need immigration to be exclusively or almost exclusively one ethnic group -- that is just asking for problems.
If we need immigrants, then we need a good mix of immigrants. A Mexican should not have more chance than a Haitian, or an Ethiopian, or a Frenchmen, or a Ugandan. Equal and balanced.
Have you not read the thread at all? What the MAYOR is doing is finding a way to decrease the illegal population by providing true and sincere illegals a way to become honest, tax-paying citizens.
I think what you are not saying but want to say is you want Mexicans gone. Which is fine, I won't judge you. But at least be honest about it.

No I am not. We do not need trash immigrants. We need responsible immigrants that believe in education, and self-reliance.
No immigrant shoudl be coming to get on food stamps, Medicaid or any other handout program. Like I said -- self-reliant, hard working immigrants who believe in some self-responsibility.
