And yet Spanish speaking immigrants (illegal and legal) are either too proud and/or too stupid to learn English.
I don't believe they are stupid, but I do believe they are being abetted by hispanic advocacy groups that have an interest in keeping Spanish speaking immigrants and their descendents dependent upon them.

I have only admiration for people who do this. I do not expect flawless, nonaccented English. But I do expect that the attempt to learn and become fluent is made.

I have met some East Indians and Filipinos who spent their entire childhood in the Philippines/India and only came to the U.S when they became adults, that have a better grasp of the English language than many American born Hispanics. That's why Filipinos and East Indians are considered model minorities while Hispanics are not.

I lived in Brazil when I was in my twenties. I did try to learn Portuguese & even learned how to read it relatively well , but I never really spoke it fluently. I wonder if people were bothered by this.

The fact that you attempted to learn Portuguese probably garnered a lot of respect from the locals

Too; despite my inability to understand it, the language of the Lusitanians is absolutely musical to my ears.

You're right. I really do think it is the most lyrical language, so nice to listen to.... those songs by Roberto Carlos for example.

Its common for Phillipinos and Indians to learn English in their home countries. Each country even has its own dialect already. They are not really comparable.
