The reason they give is, because not all schools have ESL classes. So you have to transport them sometimes out of their neighborhood school area. The parents shoul have to transport them if they want them to learn english. I have picked up kids at some pretty nice homes, they could afford to do their own transporting or at least pay for it. ESL is a govrnment funded (disability)program, they can not properly communicate. At least here in MN it is.
ESL is state funded. ESL programs are way better than those bi-lingual education schools. I'd rather have my tax dollars going to ESL than bi-lingual ed. Kids at bi-lingual schools don't learn as much, or as fast than the kids in ESL programs.
Yes, ESL should be offered to legal immigrant kids at school. If not, they're slowing down the rest of the class who are American citizens and have always spoken English.
It's for OUR sake, not theirs. Also, if they speak proper English, they're liable to go on with their education and become contributing citizens in the future, instead of staying in the permanent underclass.

I don't think schools are allowed to ask if they're legal or not.
I was an ESL student before and I saw that program did help me and that it did contribute to who I am. Even now I'm studying to become an ESL teacher. I was not treated any different from other English speaking students and though i did have a disadvantage i came forward and learned.
By the way, most of the people that come to the United States have little time to prepare or no time at all. Some come to escape places were there is limited education, and some come looking for new education. That is the whole point of ESL. Why should immigrants have to pay for ESL classes when they come here to basically work for YOU. Might as well pay them back with something, why not education?
And they cannot teach English if they do not know it in the first place. I think people need to actually look at this from another perspective and not think about the money.
The taxes you are paying now contribute to ESL but if they didn't, they'd be contributing to something else, so it's all the same.

If said immigrants are here legally: I can respect your points----------if illegal, they need to be deported.
ESL is understandable. The only caveats I would have is the time spent in and ESL classroom should be minimized with increasing emmersion in English speaking classes.
i voted no when in fact i believe that LEGAL immigrants should have access to those classes at tax payer expense. it's to our advantage to help LEGAL immigrants assimilate.
on the other hand ILLEGAL ALIENS SHOULD NOT HAVE ACCESS TO THESE OR ANY OTHER ENTITLEMENT......DAMN IT!
I fully support ESL classes. Even more fully support native Spanish speakers classes once at the high school level. As a native English speaker who learned Spanish to a ACTFL level of low advanced just from the public school system, being able to take advantage of the resource of having ESL students and native Spanish speakers classes was an excellent help to my Spanish abilities.
But sadly, I guess since they're illegal, any externalities are moot, right?

Assimilate or be sidelined. Does Mexico have similar classes for non Spanish speakers across the board?
I am being harsh but being realistic as well.
