A federal judge in Manhattan will decide, as early as tomorrow, whether to force the federal government to process a backlog of tens of thousands of citizenship applications in time for Election Day.
The backlog is partly attributable to a spike in applications last year prompted by an announcement of fee increases. It is also due to a bottleneck in the naturalization process related to FBI reviews of its investigative files for adverse information about applicants. Such reviews — which were made more comprehensive after it was discovered that the federal government in 2002 had naturalized a person with ties to Hezbollah — are at the heart of a class action in Manhattan on behalf of as many as 55,000 immigrants in the New York region who have citizenship applications that have been pending for more than half a year.
The judge, Lawrence McKenna of U.S. District Court in Manhattan, is expected to issue a ruling tomorrow, two people familiar with the case said. The plaintiffs are asking him to force the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services to adjudicate citizenship applications "without waiting for the results" of the FBI checks, which are known as "name checks," according to court papers filed by the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund. Waits endured by applicants can take several years.

Judge Could Soon Order Clearing of Big Immigration Backlog - August 6, 2008 - The New York Sun

How insane is it going to get? First and foremost we need to get back to basics. While I appreciate the fact that they are trying to come in the front door, it doesn't mean that we are obligated to fling it open and ignore any potential dangers to America so these unvetted foreigners can fulfill their heart's desire. It's not like they are coming here to fill any need. It's time to end the insanity of fulfilling the world's version of living the American Dream, in lieu of foregoing the safety of our citizens. Close the damn door and turn OFF the lamp.

This reminds me when under Bill Clinton-before his reelection campaign- when they sped up the citizenship paperwork of immigrants without doing the proper background checks. We ended up granting citizenship to violent criminals who would have otherwise been denied had the proper background check been performed.

And we both know how history repeats itself. Some people never learn from their mistakes, unfortunately, too many of these people are part of our government.

I agree JDubsMom. It is bad enough we have illegals here with absolutely no background check done on them- we know nothing about them but the many aliases they give. Now we are once again considering allowing people to become American citizens without proper background checks. Even worse-this time it will be post 9-11.

Unfortunately, we are all getting to know them in all of their unflattering "glory". Murderers, drug/human smugglers, body snatchers, rapists, child molesters, identity thieves, drunk drivers, and in sum the bottom of every 3rd world barrel even by their standards.
