Thanks to a new study out from the Pew Hispanic Center today, we now have a solid citation for there being more than 8 million illegal foreign workers currently holding U.S. jobs!
Using the largest estimate of illegal workers in agriculture jobs, that means more than 7 million illegal aliens are holding down jobs in the construction, manufacturing and service industries.
Those are the jobs being sought (yes, this is the same number) by more than 7 million unemployed American workers who have no more than a high school education.
Why would the unions turn their backs on unemployed American workers?
Because backing illegal foreign workers -- and foreign workers in general -- is where the money is. Even for unions.
What is the business of unions? Union dues.
About the only kind of growth in the union business for a long time has been in unionizing foreign workers. The unions made especially strong in-roads among illegal workers. Thanks to a loophole in the 1986 law that made it illegal to hire an illegal alien, it is perfectly legal for a union to provide membership to an illegal alien. But the unions are hopeful that they will be able to get union dues out of a lot more of the 8 million illegal aliens if an amnesty can be secured for them.
Having been a union member in SEVERAL labor unions for a time in the past, I can only suggest that unions are a useful 'bargaining unit' against rapacious management.....but beyond that, one of the PRIMARY objectives of ANY union is the perpetuation of the union, itself.
The theory behind the 'need' for a union is a powerless, weak, downtrodden workforce. You can't get much more 'weak and downtrodden' than to be illegal..it's the very ESSENCE of an 'exploited class', and it's 'tailor-made' for a 'knight in shining armor' (a union) to come to the rescue...(for a reasonable fee, of course...payable out of each paycheck. Where exactly does the 'dues money' go? Don't ask. We got you a LUNCH BREAK, didn't we?)..
Most American workers today are NOT union members, and have been convinced over the decades that they don't "need" unions..because "unions protect the losers", unions "abuse their OWN members", and tell one "when he can, and can't, work".
Illegals are helpless and pretty much at the 'mercy' of outside forces in a way that few American workers are....(or at least, as few THINK they are)....and as a result, a Union can find a 'willing audience' among abused illegals that hasn't existed among American workers for two generations or so.
It's a sad statement on society that unions would favor the 'illegal' over the 'legal' in this way, purely for their own selfish reasons...but they certainly aren't the ONLY self-serving interest group with 'guilt' in this matter.....(how about 'management'?)..
