Why did the USA ever let the Irish into this country? It's been all DOWN HILL since then.

Let's face the harsh truth, most of them are filthy drunks. Moreover, their embrace of terrorism as a political weapon is very distrubing in a democratic republic like the USA. From Northern Ireland to the ETA in Spain, we see the Irish (or their descendents) engaging in terrorism.

I SAY NO MORE IRISH IN THE GOOD OLD USA!!! THE MADNESS MUST STOP NOW!!!!

Firstly, when the Irish arrived in the US the majority of them immigrated legally---key word: legally. Yes, many of them were treated unfairly due to their religion, ethnicity, nationality, etc. It was wrong but those who entered legally had every right to be here.

Illegal aliens, regardless of their nationality/race/ethnicity/religion/social status , should NOT be here. They broke the laws and deserve to be detained, prosecuted, punished and deported ASAP.

Anyone who enters and follows the rules regardless of their nationality/race/ethnicity/religion/social status should be allowed into the country and respected for following the rules.

You can neither enter the US illegally nor overstay your visa. Those are both crimes. You couldn't get away with either crimes in any civilized country so it shouldn't even be allowed here in the US.

There are rules to abide by and they should be respected. Should we just allow anyone to enter and stay while not following the rules especially when our country is currently vulnerable to terrorism & drug cartel violence?

So, what are you trying to imply? Illegal immigration should be acceptable? Quit beating around the bush and mention it.

Define 'Irish' please.

Genetically speaking; they are quite similar to the Scots, Welsh and of course the English--------and, that is not factoring in Irish nationals of Black, Asian, etc. heritage.

And; today's Irish are actually quite affluent and sober with replacement level (or below) birthrates.

Is this a pro-illegal attempt to convince us all that illegal immigration should be acceptable?

The laws and security of our country should NEVER ever be comprised at the expense of cheap illegal labor.

I honestly don't care about the nationality/race/ethnicity/religion/social status/etc. of anyone who wants to immigrate legally to the US. As long as he/she has followed the rules and continues doing so then he/she should be welcomed with open arms.

"The Irish" (such as they were) arrived for the most part over a century ago. At that time, the US was a tough place to be accepted...the rule was 'sink or swim', 'take it or leave it'. No attempt was made to 'understand' the Irish, or to 'accomodate' their culture. They were usually marginalized, mocked, made the 'butt' of constant jokes and looked down upon. Newspapers regularly ran political cartoons in which "The Irish" were portrayed as primitive, bumbling apes....a jug of whiskey in one hand, a billy club in the other, a rosary around the neck, and a cheap pipe in the mouth. They were USUALLY pictured in these cartoons s either drinking, or rioting, or both. Police vans were called "Paddy Wagons" in honor of their usual 'cargo'....Irish suspects being hauled off to the 'pokey'.

The bloodiest riot in US history was perpetrated by angry Irish immigrants, furious that THEY were being drafted into the army to fight the Civil War, while "rich anglos" could legally BUY their way out of the draft for $300. Earlier, so angry were the Irish at their 'discrimination' at the hands of the anglo Protestant majority, that huge numbers of them serving in the War against Mexico in 1846-48, defected to the Mexican side to join their fellow Catholics in fighting the hated gringo. Today, these "San Patricios" hold a place of honor in Mexican history...though HERE, those who returned were treated as traitors.

To make a LONG story short, The Irish arrived a LONG time ago; they got no 'favors'..nobody gave a 'Rat's #ss' about their 'culture', and nobody made them feel particularly 'appreciated'. They got no welfare; no AFDC; no "Gaelic language voting materials", and nobody felt the need to 'include' them. THey came LONG before anybody felt a need for 'multiculturalism'..and any comparison between THEIR situation, and illegals today, is just SILLY...(but I suspect MOST of us really KNOW that already...right?)

Actually, the Irish began arriving in large numbers in the 1830's/1840's. And yes, much of what you say is true. Many shopkeepers put up signs with the acronym: NINA (No Irish Need Apply).

Yet, were the Irish actually more likely to riot? In fact, the worst urban riots in U.S. history were the "draft riots" in NYC during the civil war. The barbaric Irish looted, pillaged, and even burned a black orphanage!!

JDubsMom is correct: there is a Forum here on City Data for Legal Iimmigration-----------which would apply to most Irish folks 150 years ago.
