Gov. John Baldacci today vetoed a bill that would have repealed some provisions of Maine's Real ID law, enacted last year under pressure from federal authorities. Lawmakers voted Monday to repeal a provision of the anti-terrorism law that requires people to show so-called "legal presence" before getting a driver's license. They also repealed a provision requiring further study of facial recognition and other "biometric" technology.

Chances of an override are slim.

Way to go, Mr. Baldacci!

As of now, the issuance of driver's licenses is a state regulation not a federal regulation although I'm certain that the REAL ID Act requires states to abide by some federal regulations.

"Maine's legal presence requirement is reasonable and justified," Baldacci said in a statement. "I do not believe that Maine should issue drivers' licenses to people who are not in the country legally. A driver's license is more than just a license to drive a car. It is an official credential that is used for many other purposes and which can be misused by someone in the country illegally. To change Maine's law unnecessarily puts at risk the integrity of State-issued credentials".
Wow. We need a lot more governors like this one. He certainly would have my vote. Are we finally returning back to good old common sense over political bipartisanship corruption?

A win for those of us who actually believe illegal should mean "illegal" (AKA those of us who have brains larger than the size of a peanut). What a novel idea...illegal = ILLEGAL. No legal documents issued to those who are illegal. Seems simple enough.

Many States that haven't been trampled by the Illegal invasion yet are slow to get on the band wagon. They travel from State to State causing burden so great the State is forced to join the rest of the States outlawing the madness.

Flip side: as the pressure (both social and legal) increases on said illegal alien losers------------more and more of them will flee the USA.
