an article from the LA Times discussing the new policies in place to verify the legal status of those seeking government provided medical assistance.

it focuses on LA county, but considers other states audited. suprisingly, very few cases of illegals trying to get help exist.

Verification of illegal immigrants is scrutinized amid healthcare debate -- latimes.com

"Since July 2008, when Los Angeles County began implementing tougher federal verification rules, Rincon and his colleagues have gone back to check the documents of more than 100,000 recipients of Medi-Cal, the public healthcare program for low-income residents.

The county has received nearly $28 million in state and federal funds to cover the cost of the program and posted 81 people in 27 social service department offices to check documents, Walker said.

So far, they have not found one illegal immigrant who posed as a legal resident to get benefits, according to Deborah Walker, the county's Medi-Cal program director. Fewer than 1% of applicants between July 2008 and February 2009 lacked the proper documents, and many of those applicants eventually produced them, she said."

They do not have to pose as legal residents. They already get millions in benefits in spite of their illegal status.

In 2005, Medi-cal paid for 251,926 deliveries.

42% of the mothers were illegal aliens.

Delivering dual benefits
Medi-Cal spends about $400 million a year on birth-related care for illegal immigrants.

......one of more than 100,000 undocumented women each year who bear children in California with expenses paid by Medi-Cal, according to state reports. They now account for about one in five births.

Such births and associated expenses account for more than $400 million of the nearly $1 billion that the program spends each year on healthcare for illegal immigrants in California, documents and reports show.

<snip>

Births and prenatal care are the biggest single outlay by Medi-Cal for illegal immigrants' healthcare, with the rest going for various other emergency treatments, limited breast and cervical cancer treatment, abortions and some nursing home care, according to the state.

This is stupid.

They go to the frickin emergency room for everything. Who are you trying to fool? Of coarse they are not going to file for assistance. They have free care right at the hospital.
You can't get a job as a nurse here, unless you are bilingual, fluent Spanglish.

Is Medi-Cal still paying for "undocumented" births today?

According to the article things changed in '08, did they?

Yes they are. That is part of our federal law that requires "stabilizing".

Not an ongoing condition. It ends when the baby is born. The child, who IS a US citizen, can get healthcare.

You're right, pregnancy is still covered by Medi-Cal; can't find any recent statistics though:

http://www.healthconsumer.org/cs041Medi-CalFlowChart.pdf

"Full Medi-Cal benefits are available to U.S. citizens and many permanent resident aliens (i.e. people who have “green cards.”) Recent refugees may also be eligible for Medi-Cal under special programs.
If a person has no immigration documents or is a more recent immigrant, s/he may only be eligible for emergency services, family planning, prenatal, and childbirth services, or certain other limited services."

Edit: I just noticed the date on that flowchart is 2006.

It most certainly doesn’t “end” when the baby is born. It’s the beginning of years of sucking at the U.S. taxpayers’ teat. The baby is the key to receiving ALL benefits reserved for citizens, which is precisely why most illegals have at least one child born on U.S. soil. Without their meal tickets, they would not ‘legally’ qualify for WIC, welfare, subsidized housing, or myriad other freebies illegals enjoy. It’s a despicable practice that devalues human life as well as U.S. citizenship. It’s parasitic behavior, period.

Back in December, when she was six months pregnant, Fabiola, her husband and their two daughters - ages 4 and 11 - crossed the Rio Grande from Mexico into the U.S.

Once on the other side of the river they walked for two hours in search of a better life and free medical care for their unborn child.

"Do many women in Mexico make the choice to have their children in the United States?" Pitts asked.

"Yes," she said through a translator. "I know people who have done that. Things are much better here in the U.S. because they help children so much more."
Quote:
"Mothers about to give birth that walk up to the hospital still wet from swimming across the river in actual labor … dirty, wet, cold," he said.

But here to have a child?

"Here to have a child in the U.S.," he said.
A nauseating video used to be available for viewing at the following link. Funny, it has now been disabled. I wonder why.
