GREAT BARRINGTON - Organizers planned the gathering at the Triplex Cinema as a way to rally support for keeping Albaro Francisco, a local business owner and community activist, in the country. Francisco was taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents at the end of September and was charged with being in the country illegally.
But the purpose of the gathering changed with the news that Francisco had already been sent to his native country of Mexico.
Good. He can use his skills to start a business in Mexico that will provide jobs and help the local economy. He can also work as an activist in Mexico and lobby for better conditions for the Mexican people. This is a win-win situation.
Vanegas and other supporters said immigrants are an important part of the local workforce and community, and reforms should be undertaken which would allow undocumented workers to remain in the country and become accounted for.
This is a very good article--thanks for posting.
Truly a sad situation. Let's hope some good comes from this, and lobbying efforts are galvanized for immigration reform and amnesty.
Once again, this whole subject has a surreal atmosphere."ONLY in America", as they say. Imagine this as a 'generic' story, happening anywhere else in the world....A foreign guy attracts the attention of authorities..after investigation, he's found to have been residing in his 'adopted' country without having gone through the proper steps. Authorities notify him he'll have to leave....he packs his belongings, says his 'good byes', and leaves for home.
This is NEWS? This must happen THOUSANDS of times all over the world, on a weekly basis. Why is this news? You overstay your 'welcome'..(or fail to get it in the first place), you get caught, and you then have to leave.
So why was he not granted an EB-5? Looks like he would meet all the automatic eligibility requirements. (EB-5 grants automatic legal residency to aliens who have invested more than $1,000,000 and created more than 10 jobs in the United States. Very commonly used by Canadians and Indians after their temporary visas run out.)
