Deputies found Cruz Mario Carnacion, 37, and Jose Luis Trejo-Yanez in possession of more than 500 7-inch spikes, which weigh about a half-pound each and can be sold for scrap.
Davis called the pair's actions “incredibly selfish,” saying the missing spikes could have caused a train to derail.
“We've never heard of it, we've never seen it where people are actually pulling up railroad spikes,” he said. “This act of theft could have easily had catastrophic consequences had a train derailed in this area.”
The pair pulled most of the spikes directly from the railroad ties, though some were lying loose along the tracks, Davis said.
Deputies immediately called officials with Norfolk Southern to report the theft and the possible threat to the integrity of the tracks, he said.
Norfolk Southern Public Relations Manager Robin Chapman said he could not comment on the condition of the tracks.
Chapman said thieves often walk tracks to collect loose railroad spikes to sell to scrap metal yards.
“One individual spike isn't worth that much scrap value, but you collect a quantity of them,” he said.
Carnacion and Trejo-Yanez were charged with felony conspiracy to damage railroad property, willful injury to railroad property and trespassing on railroad property.
The men did not give a permanent address and Henderson County's immigration program determined they had entered the United States illegally, Davis said.
They were each placed under a $25,000 bond and ordered held on Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainers pending deportation proceedings.

This to me equates as an act of sabotage against America. Others have used planes, now it is our trains. Derailment could have been catastrophic if it hasn't happened already.

Just doing a job most Americans won't do. Will the harassment of honest hard working illegals never end?

For all the screams of pro-illegals do about racism, they are always the one to bring it up first. I have yet to read a racist statement from any anti-illegal alien proponent in here.
Some say about this article, oh, it was nothing, yeah, it was nothing that a couple of terrorists took flying lessons and slammed planes into our financial buildings and Pentagon, it was nothing that they killed thousands of Americans. We need secure borders to keep scum like those in the article out of America so we can deal with our own in this Nation. Illegal Aliens deter us from focusing on what is needed in this country for added security. An extremely costly nuisance. "Go home. Leave our country to us to fix without you messing it up even further."

How can anyone possibly not consider this egregious behavior a threat to our country? Are these criminals so stupid not to realize the ramifications of removing spikes from railroad tracks? C’mon, they HAD to know they could cause a derailment.

They are criminals and deserve to be treated as such, it could have been pure idiocy or an act with real intent to cause harm. At the same time each immigrant has his, sometimes tragic, personal story.
I do not have angelic views at all, am very scared when reading about "black tar" trafficking or acts such as the one mentioned here, but let's keep in mind immigrants are comprised of good and bad people...
