france and the UK have been engaged in a struggle over illegal immigrants, with neither side wanting to claim them. france flies them home and bills the UK for them, and residents all over are caught in the middle (as always):

Under English law they are not trespassing - they are technically 'squatting' and have as much right to occupy a shed in the garden as they would have to occupy a HOUSE if they could gain entry without causing damage.

There is no criminal offence of trespass except in certain cases such as Ministry of Defence land and railway land.

The police are quite correct - it is a civil matter.
