PUERTO PEÑASCO, Mexico — The president of Mexico vigorously defended the right of his countrymen to migrate to the United States, calling it “natural phenomenon” which is “socially and economically unavoidable.”
And regardless of whether they arrive legally or not, they are entitled to be treated with dignity, Felipe Calderón told the governors of both U.S. and Mexican border states Thursday.
“I would also say it is advantageous for the United States’ economy,” Calderón said at the opening ceremonies of the annual Border Governors Conference. He said the two countries have “complementary economies.”
“The U.S. economy is capital-intensive,” the president said, while the economy of Mexico is labor-intensive.
To illustrate that point, he said it will be only a few years until there are 70 million retired U.S. citizens. At the same time, Calderón continued, most Mexicans are younger than 30.
He also rejected arguments that Mexican nationals are taking jobs from U.S. citizens.
“Mexican workers in the United States are a complement to workers, not a substitute,” the president said. And aside from providing labor, “they pay taxes.”
Even if Mexicans emigrating to the United States were not good for the U.S. economy, Calderón said that is not an excuse for abuse. “Mexican workers deserve dignified treatment,” he said.
Calderón also told those in attendance, including business leaders and government officials, he has not given up trying to find economic opportunities to allow people in his country to work there. In fact, he said Mexico needs to do that to keep some of its best people at home.
“The most strong and daring people are those who migrate,” he said. “They are willing to face death for the survival of their families.”
But he said even more economic development in his country will not stop people from going to the United States to look for work. What he wants, Calderón said, is a situation where “immigration will be an option, not the only option.”
Gov. Janet Napolitano agreed with much of what Calderón said, including the economic interdependence of the two countries. But she made it clear the need for foreign workers has to be met only through legal means.
“One of the problems that we have quite frankly is we need to lift the visa caps in the United States so that more legal immigration can occur,” she said.
“There is always going to be legal migration between our countries,” the governor continued. “But it does neither of our countries any good to have massive illegal immigration going back and forth.”
While Napolitano repeated her call on the federal government to do more to secure the border, Calderón suggested the money to do that could be better spent elsewhere.
“A huge fence is not what will provide prosperity,” he said. What is needed, he said, is investment.
“A mile of highway will do more to prevent immigration than a mile of fence in Sonora,” Calderón said.

Mexico has about the 13th largest economy in the world: it is not poor by Black Africa/East Indian standards.
And too the per capita income (men, women and children) of that land is over $10K. Parts of our country are 'poorer'-------a family of three here in the USA with an income of $29K a year would rank below Mexico.
The problem SOB is the extreme divide between the wealthy and the poor------which Mexico needs to address prior to demanding squat from us.

If the birthrate was still high I would understand your fears; but, I still think there are a 'few miles' left on this country prior to us joining Rome, etc on the scrap heap of history.
MEXICO CITY (AP) — A Mexican Senate committee passed a measure Wednesday urging President Felipe Calderon to send a diplomatic note to the United States protesting the deportation of an illegal migrant who took refuge in a Chicago church for a year.
The committee also approved a scholarship to help her 8-year-old U.S.-born son, Saul, who is an American citizen and stayed in the United States.
There is an inferiority complex dating back to the days of the conquest and subsequen Spanish colonization. The Spaniards themselves refered to the Arabs as Moors, "Moros" in Spanish which means "dark-skinned". A black eye in one's face in Spanish Spanish is "ojo moro", in Mexican Spanish is "ojo morado" or "violet eye".
The Spanish conquest in Mexico was successfull on three counts: first, the locals had never seen horses before and thought that horse and rider were one being, and the second, the Aztecs managed to be hated by everyone else, as they subjugated a number of other nations under them to build their empire. These nations allied with the Spaniards to topple the Aztecs, but alas, the Spaniards' plans were different. Third, the Spaniards brought with them smallpox, which decimated the local population during an epidemic that was second to none in Europe; millions perished.
Mexican society was divided in castes which determined the socio-political and economic level of the people: first, there were the Europeans, mostly Spaniards, who had all the wealth, government positions (conveniently far from Spain, they could loot the country at will) and were the entrepreneurs and landowners. Some among them were nobles too and were styled counts or dukes or barons. Then came the "criollos" or creoles, the children of European fathers and mothers born in Mexico. Then came the "mestizos", as explained above, and a host of others like the "mulatos", children of a white father and a black mother, as we did have slaves from Africa too, but not to the extent of the USA.
The "mestizos" were way below in the food chain, most were children of single mothers and were not recognized by their fathers. Last names or family names had to be given when the kids were baptized, and since the mothers didn't know the last name of the fathers of their children, they used his first name as the kids' last name. The "mestizos" were the children of the powerful, exploiting European father and the subjugated, powerless, raped Mexican mother.
This is how the Mexican inferiority complex was born, and this is why the country is white supremacist, as another poster has adequately described it.
For some reason, it looks like the dark skin color of the Native Mexicans tends to prevail for generations, and along with it, the inferiority complex of people here.
Swept aside from mainstream Mexico since the 1500s, rural communities in the country still count among their population a vast majority of Native Mexicans and "mestizos". On top of Spanish, 57 local languages are spoken in the country. In this day and age some people still don't speak Spanish. As a country we have failed to incorporate them into our civilization (for good or bad) and they are the ones that emigrate in search of better opportunities. Commiting a crime is the last thing they intend to do, so while in your legal system they are criminals, some won't understand that. In some parts of the country, Mexico has had to make exceptions because rule of law won't apply there, instead, it's "uses and customs" and our government must abide or else. Such is the case of Chiapas.
I hope I have explained the roots of the problem that your country and mine are facing.

Calderon and Mexican government think ONLY of what 'they' want in America, the height of brazen arrogance and we owe them attitude...it's no wonder so many illegals here are of the same mentality causing much trouble and crime. If Hillary wins, Mexico will get just what they want and we will be further in poverty, crime, sardines in a can, a third world country just like Mexico.
