LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Colombian-born pop star Shakira will meet with the mayor of Phoenix this week to help campaign against a new Arizona law cracking down on illegal immigration, a member of the mayor's staff said Tuesday.
The Grammy-winning singer-songwriter will speak with Mayor Phil Gordon, a strong critic of the new law, and other city officials Thursday afternoon, a spokesman for the mayor said.
Shakira, best known for her hit singles "Hips Don't Lie" and "Whenever, Wherever," also was expected to meet with families who could be affected by the Arizona law.
Representatives for the singer declined to comment on her visit to Arizona. The newly enacted immigration statute there has come under fire from Hispanic groups, organized labor and civil liberties activists who charge the measure is unconstitutional and will lead to ethnic profiling.
one way or another illegal entry to the US has to stop before the firing line gets set up at the border. Then there will be no miss understanding who is legal and who is not .
I'm sure for many of these pop stars, it's more about knowing where the cameras are and wanting to jump in front of them.
Or why doesn't this woman do something to improve living conditions in some of the hispanic countries so that so many of "her raza" won't have to pack up and leave. She could put her money where her mouth is. Oh - but that doesn't get her camera time and the publicity she craves.
Maybe Shakira needs to be deported, assuming she is not a US citizen. Mexico definitely would boot her out if she pulled that crap SoB.
I have a feeling this Colombian is an extreme hypocrit when it comes to certain laws being respected. Imagine if they were illegally pirating her songs, then you can bet she'd be screaming about legal and not legal.
These stars are fearful, perhaps, that if this movement spreads, they might have to, one day, start paying their domestic help minimum wage, or, more painfully, a living wage.
^^^ Is that your way of diviating from the main issue? First you generalize Latin stars by calling them gay. There is nothing wrong with being gay...it's your issue if you felt the need to address it. Then, you call Shakira fat. What does any of it have to do with the boycott of AZ due to the immigration bill? Some people have issues...
As a gay man myself, I find it embarrassing that Ricky Martin is deciding to boycott AZ. There are ALOT of gay men here, and many are not impressed by his need to be in the spotlight about this.
