Did I miss something? Why would you cancel a flight and drive 15+hours?

If you are going for a business trip: fly
If you are going for a special occassion: fly
If you are going to visit friends or relatives: fly
If you are going to school: drive
If you are going to move: drive.

If you leave Friday morning you arrive Sunday Night. If you are going to drive buy a very good map and be prepared to pay tolls .

Its a Long weekend, most probably all the flights will be booked - If I wait till Friday and they cancel the flight, they are gonna say Sorry No availability on other flights, here is your refund.

I am debating to wait till Friday afternoon to find out or just drive instead?

12-15 hr drive - with 2 drivers we should be there Friday evening - Maybe I do a one way rental and fly back.

Check out the latest projections. You have a real dilemma, for sure.
Hurricane Tracking and Tropical Storm coverage from MyFoxHurricane.com | Powered by MyFoxTampaBay and the FOX Network

Some real good graphs and charts are on that site.

Are you just coming for a weekend or something much longer? Coming for school or something else? I've done the drive many times, but wouldn't recommend it for someone staying a short amount of time, even with 2 drivers. If you come for a 4 day weekend, you'll have a 2 day weekend, one full day on the road, any spillover effects from the drive on the other day. Flying is the way to go if you are just visiting Chicago, it will be much less of an hassle.

There are worse things than having a canceled flight in the wake of a hurricane. If your flight gets canceled, hopefully you can visit Chicago soon after and spend this weekend doing something else enjoyable in NY.

Somehow I didn't pay attention; guess that's what happens when I don't watch Weather Center or Tom Skilling for several days. I would wait until late tomorrow or Friday. If you fly Fri but may need a one way rental for return, make an advance reservation that can be cancelled without fees.

It was a little too late by the time I saw this post, but I would have suggested the Amtrak as a backup option. Two options are viable for getting to NYC from Chicago. One is the one-seat ride Lakeshore Limited (longer route through upstate NY unfortunately, plus they check passports & stuff near Buffalo, NY -- HUGE PITA), and the other is the shorter route Capitol Limited + Pennsylvanian combo where you have a short layover in Pittsburgh. You could perhaps have gone to NYC by train and flew back (or vice-versa) so that your trip wouldn't be sucked up by all the ground travel time.

The other option I would've suggested if driving would be to drive up to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and take the Amtrak into NYC the rest of the way. The "Keystone Services" route which goes from Harrisburg to NYC via Philly is almost like a frequent high-speed line that transports you from the PA capital through Amish country into the skyscrapers of Philly & NYC at like 110 MPH, it's quite awesome and much more reliable than the trains out here in the freight-clogged Midwest.
