I have never been in or near there, but I am astonished to see that it is the #1 highest crime rate in the nation. Is this place really that bad? What is it like to drive through there? I am a short, skinny white guy from the country. What would happen to me if I were to take a walk through the city, all over?

"What would happen to me if I were to take a walk through the city, all over?"

Are you seriously that naive? At some point, you would run across some bored gangbangers who are offended that you are on their turf and who see you as vunerable. They will challenge you. Perhaps ask for some of your personal belonging. What happens next is anyone's guess. Your race has nothing to do with it. Being small, out of place and an easy target is what will get you in trouble.

Solid advice.

I guess East St. Louis is scary or overwhelming if you never lived in the ghetto or the hood with a moderate-very high violent crime rate. Even for those that do come from another dicey area, ESTL can be a bit more challenging to adjust because of how severely blighted it is and you don't know anyone there. I have never been to ESTL either. Driving through there shouldn't be that bad. I drove hundreds of times in the most gang ridden hoods Chicago proper has to offer. But taking a walk in ESTL can create a lot of problems for you. I wouldn't do it, despite that I live in a dicey town myself. Its best to drive around

Yep. Even though East Saint Louis was #1, your town of Harvey was #29 on the list of "Top 101 cities with the highest 2006 city-data.com crime index per resident, excludes tourist destinations and others with a lot of outsiders visiting based on city industries data"

You have a 50/50 chance of getting hurt, robbed or carjacked. I have been through there plenty of times visiting my in-laws and nothing has happened. I have seen a few white people walking around (looking like bums IMO). One time I was riding with my husband and his friend and this car pulled up next to us like they wanted to jack us but his friend stared them down and they sped off.

If you HAVE to go through there, don't idle at the stop signs too long, don't stare at the residents or drivers next to you, set your g.p.s for Fairview HTS.

And it's been that scarey for a long time. I pulled off I70 to get some gas quite a few years ago. I decided to look for a place to eat. It only took a few blocks to realize myself and anyone else I ever knew did not belong there. I broke a few traffic laws getting myself out of the "hood" and back on I70.
