Hi, I am a African American female with 5 kids (4 boys & 1 girl), I currently reside in the south suburbs of Illinois. I want to relocate to a city where there are good schools and low crime. I currently have a section 8 voucher. I was thinking about Shelbyville, IN-does anyone know if racsim exists in this town. I was also thinking about Merrillville, IN or Indianapolis. Please let me know if you have any suggestions. Thanks

Would this be better posted in the Indiana forum?

Let me explain something about Section 8 and schools. I am current on this subject as I have been helping a family in the same circumstances in OH move to Illinois

First there is a NEW state law. You do not need a permanet address to enroll your children. You can live in shelter. If you are temporarily homeless your children will be assigned an Advocate at school to make sure their needs are met.

Secondly the Section 8 vouchers are good in any state, but what you will find is horrendous red tape to wade through while you and your children wait for your voucher to be approved so you can find a place to live. Most of the states have a residency requirement -- and you cannot enroll until you meet it. Illinois is one of the first states in the nation to waive that requirement. All you have to do is take your children to school and tell them you want to enroll them.

THIS IS A NEW LAW recently passed. I learned3 days ago from a grandparent caregiver.

I have some ideas. If you will contact me privately - click on my name in the upper left corner and select send a direct message - we can discuss them. .

Re-read what I wrote. Yes I know she is thinking about Indiana. There is a 30 Day residency requirement in Indiana, Ohio, Iowa, SD, NY, NJ, and most of the other states too.

She has to find a place for 7 people to live for 30 days BEFORE she can enroll her kids in school.

That's the crux of it.
