It is a farm town of approximately 8,000 residents and the seat of Marion County government. I counted 22 Churches, and found a half-dozen restaurants. public schools and religious schools in Salem. I found a public librarary but not much information on tv/telephone/internet providers or who provides gas and electric. City Hall should know. It is most likely a conservative Republican stronghold. Demographically it is overwhelmingly white with 2.87% 'others'. The medidan income for males is roughly $32K; females with $10K less.

Southern Illinois is neither heavily populated nor particularly prosperous. Fifteen counties were declared disasters in last Spring's flooding. Your cost of living will be much cheaper than California, though.

The closestest Top 25 Ranked Hospital in the Midwest is Barnes-Jewish in St.Louis. Your upscale dining, and familiar brands like Tj's. Costco, and Whole Foods is either in St. Louis or Chicago. I like Trader Joe's at Brentwood in St. Louis as it is the largest stlore and offers and easy in easy out exit back to Illinois. .
