USPS is probably the cheapest way and you might be able to have them pick them up! Otherwise, try Amtrak.

Other options are Trailways or Greyhound Bus or a trailer smaller than a truck rental. The largest U-Haul and a long bed pickup can handle a lot of things. If you have a contractor's cab on the pick up bed, you can haul even more. If the bed is open you must tie and tarp the boxes properly. A short open bed F-150 can haul 10,000 pounds. Then you can figure a minim of 14 -18 hours round trip and $4 per gallon for gas. You cannot pull a loaded trailer 65mph. If you are lucky you may get 10mpg mileage.

I say the things from 25 years of experience moving myself between states.
