Rockford averages somethin like 2,000 burglaries a year.
So if U stay on the westside, southwest, or southeast side where most of these burglaries occur then I'd reccomend renter's insurance. It don't really cost that much.

it is not mandatory, but you would really be sorry if you didn't have it and something happened! a family in our community was renting a townhouse and it caught fire. they lost everything! they had 5 or 6 kids, a grandpa, a single mom and her boyfriend all living there. it is pretty inexpensive for the peace of mind.

It is a good idea no matter where you live.

GET RENTERS INSURANCE. Last week due to bad storms, we had a power surge in our apartment, caused a fire in one room, lost 2 tvs, microwave, computer, and other appliances. GET RENTERS INSURANCE

Definitely get renter's insurance. If you have a car, you can usually get a discount with car insurance. I have renter's insurance, and have had it for years, even when I lived in a bit of a higher crime neighborhood than I do now, it still only cost me about $17 a month (I pay less than that now).
