Rantoul, IL is in Champaign County not too far from Champaign and Urbana aka the flagship University of Illinois. Fifty years ago, however, Rantoul was an Air Force Base. If he is currently active he can certainly tell you what his MOS is and where his PX is. MOS is his official job title. The PX is the Post Exchange. It's where you buy groceries, etc., while you are on base. You should be interested in years of service and rank. A guy can be a reserve officer until he dies. You could conceivably call your local recruiting office for his branch of service to see if they will/can verify if he is impersonating a active duty serviceman, but they won't tell you anything more. If he is he won't be doing it for long.

The only thing you might get for free if you know where his home town is --- is a address and and a landline number thru Internet Phone Book - Find Phone Numbers and Search Businesses | Switchboard

Meet the guy in very public places for a while. He may only be home on leave for 30 days.

Rantoul is in east central Illinois -- a quick search of Google Maps could tell you that.

There used to be an air force base there but it was decommissioned 20 years ago.

FWIW, Lincoln's ChalleNGe Academy is in Rantoul, on the site of the old air base. It is kind of a second-chance boot-camp/GED program for high school dropouts. The cadre at the academy are full time employees of the Illinois National Guard. In otherwords, there are some military people left in Rantoul, even though the base is closed.
