Hello all,

My Uncle in Rockford has been diagnosed with cancer which has already metastisized. My niece and I want to go see him while we can, and are planning a long weekend during the week of the NJ Teacher's Convention when my niece is off. Neither of us have ever been there before.

We are both trying to do this as cheaply as possible as my niece's husband has been out of work for quite awhile and they are struggling. We are flying Southwest because I have enough points there for 1 round trip and one one-way, and they only fly into Midway. We are trying not to rent a car as we are staying 4 days and won't be driving once we get there (aside from that we both live in rural areas and are scared of driving on unfamiliar highways especially busy ones near a major city). Does anyone know of any type of shuttle service or even bus or train that would get us from Midway to Rockford?

Thanks in advance!

There's no train to Rockford, but there's a good bus service called Van Galder. They have several round trips to/from Midway to 2 locations on the eastern edge of Rockford. I don't really know anything else about Rockford once you get there (e.g. public transport in the city), but this service will get you to Rockford relatively quickly and inexpensively. You can buy tickets in advance through their website or Amtrak or on the bus, but they only take cash on the bus, I'm pretty sure.

You can see their schedule here:

Rockford has it's own bus system as well. For $1.50 you can take the bus pretty much anywhere in the city. You can get 10 rides for $15. If you're using the bus as your main transportation for a week, get the 7 day saver pass for $16.
If your Uncle is at one of the hospitals, the bus will drop you right out front.

Once we're in Rockford, my aunt will transport us. She said she doesn't trust her car for the 2 hour ride to Midway and back, though, and she is also exhausted by all that is happening with my uncle right now. He is in a rehab now as he can't walk at the moment due to weakness, but we don't know where he will be or what kind of shape he will be in by November. Thanks again for all the advice!
