I can’t believe how cold and snowy itwas in Chicagoland, my initial plan to move to Chicago is now in jeopardy (notthat anyone cares). I think FL or CA is more of a serious contender at thispoint, are winters always so brutal in IL?

We've had the worst winter in 35 years. Third most snowfall on record. This is not normal weather.

No. They are obviously worse than FL or CA, but this winter is one for the record books.

You're surprised it's cold and snowy in Chicago during winter.....did I hear that correctly? Have you been around long.......I mean, on earth in general?

It has been a very unusual weather year. Period. NOAA says 97% of the Great Lakes are frozen solid with 4" thick ice in some places. Never mind the cold winds and sub-zero wind chills, this winter has been horrible for businesses that find their cargo ships trapped in ice. These owners depend on Illinois rivers to deliver their products between the Gulf and Lake Michigan.

On another note, I lived in FL., and CA. When I was in California I didn't have to worry about the rattlers outside my doors, or 'gators in my yard looking to a tasty small animal snack. Florida is a right-to-work state. California is not. If you like ocean, sandy beaches, personal space, and the good things that come with it, you might like North Country, I know I did. Discover North County Coastal San Diego, Ca. | Carlsbad, Del Mar, Oceanside & more!

The weather this winter has been the worst I can remember and I've lived here 30 years. It is a major factor in my wanting to move someday the other being the dysfunctional government which is a large drag on quality of life and employment in Illinois.

The last time I saw a winter like this was ca 1965. I did not know it was possible for Chicago to get that cold. In 1981 it started to snow in September and didn't stop until Spring. The rivers flooded that year. It flooded again in 1978 after a 16"-18" snow fell overnight and then rapidly melted in unseasonable warm temperatures. The weather in the 1940s and 50s in the Midwest was cold on Halloween, and colder on Thanksgiving which was followed by snowy and very cold winter.
