Is East St. Louis going to become the next Detroit? It already looks that bad, and, in 2007, the crime rate was higher than Detroit and as high as San Pedro Sula and Cuidad Juarez. I thought Robbins and Harvey were bad, but they are like Naperville and Hinsdale compared to East St. Louis. How does a SUBURB get this bad?

East St. Louis is not a suburb of Chicago and has been the same way for more than 20 years.

1950, East St. Louis population peaked at 82,000 people. Its been losing population ever since. In 2014 the population is right around 26,000.

East St. Louis is St Louis's version of Gary, Indiana and Camden, New Jersey. At one time they were all thriving independent cities across the state line from major American cities. Now they are all basically dangerous ghettoes and shells of what they once were, with 2014 populations close to 2/3rds less than what they were in 1950.

The specific plant closures that have hit East Louis especially hard include a variety of firms that were making rather things that involved some rather unpleasant processes / waste -- Environmental Justice Case Study: East St Louis

It is also not a suburb of St. Louis which is in Missouri with East St. Louis being in Illinois. To be a suburb the cities have to be located in the same state.
