ROTFLOL. Fixed it for ya.

2013 Census estimate Chicago 2.718.782
2013 Census estimate Cook Cty 5.240.700
2013 Estimated population 7.959.482

Actual 2010 Census population 7.890.273

2010 US Census state population 12.830.632.
2013 Estimated state population 12.882.135

So, yes, roughly two-thirds of the state population
lives in the second largest county in America - and in
its County seat which is coincidentally the third
largest city in America. It is fast approaching 8M.

Say wuh? Two hurts of the state of nearly 13 million people live in Chicagoland: Cook, Lake, DuPage, Will, DeKalb, Grundy, Kane, and Kendall counties. Cook is absolutely NOT almost 8 million people, but about 5.2 million of them. See:

LOL.. Ya got me! I'm legally blind; "Typo" is my middle name. Focusing on typing errors does not change my intent or facts, but I will clarify my statement.

2010 Census QuickFacts and not a 2013 U.S. Census Bureau estimate
Cook County 5,194,675
Chicago........2,695.598

2010 Illinois State Population
(12,830,632)

"IL has over 12 million residents of which roughly two-thirds of the population live in Cook County and in the City of Chicago."

Addendum: This does not include any of the outlier counties or states or their many residents that form Chicagoland. My comment pertains only to Cook County and its single largest community - the City of Chicago"

None of this changes the fact that Illinois does NOT have the highest taxes in the nation. Our taxes are upside down, and sad as it is Cook County/Chicago bear the brunt of it.

We've got about a million residents in DuPage County now, though the county definitely isn't the Republican stronghold that it once was. I'm pretty sure DuPage will go for Rauner, though.

Per your numbers:
5,194,675 (Cook including Chicago) / 12,830,632 (Illinois total) = 0.404 or 40.4%

Suggested correction to your statement:
"IL has over 12 million residents of which only 40% live in Cook County and in the City of Chicago."

You do know any population figures for Cook County already include the population of Chicago, right?

We must have different levels of "modest", wow. I have a nice $200K condo in the city and always pay around $2,300 in taxes per year.

In the subburbs (N Cook) a $350k house can run $7500+ so doing the math a $200k house would be about $4300+. Don't even think about Lake County. The median home price is from $250k-$350k in most middle class subburbs in the area.

And of course that assumes your property taxes are based on what the home is worth and not what the county decides it is worth in terms of what they want to tax you.

Are you serious? You're double counting Chicago when you add it to the population of Cook county....

If I said I really don't care, could you dig it? It is still the most densely populated place in Illinois. It is has no peers, and It is still the second largest county with the third largest city, and 50M visitors every year. It elects governors and presidents and dominates the state legislature. .

not about the tax rate but: It used to be people would stay in IL because there were jobs here and job creation. No longer the case with the dismal unemployment rate (for non-service industry jobs). No reason for them to stay anymore. And I can see that many retirees on fixed incomes are going to be priced out of the state.

I believe part of the problem with the high property taxes is the way IL funds the school systems.
