My unemployment benefits are about to run out in January. I have not been able to find a job nearby that pays anything close to what I was making at my last job. I really would hate to take a job paying 30% less but that seems about all I can find. I remember my neighbor's unemployment ran out about a year ago and they did not mention anything about benefit extensions but a couple days after her last benefits check , she received a letter saying she qualified for an extension of 1 year more of benefits.
Im wondering if any such extensions are still being offered and where I could find out about this?

I am sick of not working and this is the first time ive been unemployed and ready to work but afraid I cant get by on a job that pays way less than my last one and current benefits amount. Any ideas about the extensions or where to check about if they are still available?
Thank you

Take a job paying 30% less and work back up to where you were. No reason to continue sucking off of unemployment benefits if you've been offered work.

The job paying 30% less is a job I had former to my most recent job and so would be hiring back in at topped out wages $14/hr and no way to "work up" from there - where my last job I made $20/hr. I am single with kids and dont know if I can make it on that. Ive worked the last 16 years straight and this is my first time ever drawing benefits so dont appreciate the "leach" comment.
It would just be nice to have a bit more time to find a job that pays what I should be making and not have to take the first lowball job offer I get. I didnt go to school to work at Mcdonalds so your theory of taking any job is flawed because Im not going to go get a fast food job just because they are hiring.

If you're counting on an extension, forget about it. Mine ran out after 6 months. That was in May.

As far as I know no state in the country has paid unemployment extensions since last December. There is an unemployment forum on C-D here //www.city-data.com/forum/unemployment/. The experts there will know if Illinois specifically is currently paying any extension, but you should expect the answer to be NO. Millions have already been in your situation and had to take the smaller paycheck. You don't have many options left.

You can always take the lower paying job and continue to look for another one. People who are currently working tend to get more job offers.

Also, unemployment has stipulations that indicate you have to be actively seeking work. I'm not sure you would be able to keep your benefits, if the agency becomes aware that you were offered employment and turned it down.

I understand your feelings about not wanting to work for less, due to your education. Unfortunately, there are literally thousands of educated unemployed individuals..until our economy changes you are going to have to get over that. I have an MPA and took a clerical job, until I finally got hired in my field. There is something to be said about being humbled....
