How small is small? Champaign-Urbana? Bloomington-Normal? Decatur ? Smaller than that? Metro East may also be worth looking into.

I lived in Orland For a LONG time and left two years ago. Going from big to small is a big Change... Obviously the smaller the town.. the less jobs .. Im sure you can find something, but it will not be easy.

What is the criteria other than "small"?

Close enough to Chicago to visit on the weekend?
Better climate?
Geographical preferences? On the water? Wooded?
Specific stores or services you would like?
Do bank branches matter?
Hobbies?

If I had my choice I'd live in the Marion/Carbondale area or Metropolis.

Springfield has a really good medical community. It should be easy to find a job in the medical field there.

Downstate, there are plenty of places to get that nice, small town flavor while still being within commuting distance to a larger metro areas with reasonable job prospects. A few that come to mind are Washington, and Eureka near Peoria; Petersburg near Springfield; LeRoy near Bloomington/Normal,; St Joseph, Tuscola, and Mahomet near Champaign; and Monticello which is about equidistant from Champaign and Decatur. There are dozens of other small towns near those 5 major metro areas which may fit the bill.

One thing you have to "unlearn" if your thinking about moving from the Chicago metro to downstate is the relationship between distance and commute time. From Orland Park, you have to figure at least 2-3 minutes per mile for your commute time. You may shudder at the thought of living someplace 25 or 30 miles from work. But down here, there's usually no traffic until you hit the big metro area, and even then it's a cakewalk to a Chicagoland native. I work in the Champaign metro (Savoy, to be exact) and live in a small town about 19 miles away. My average commute is less than 25 minutes.
