Meh...this is a bit of a lazy hot take within the context of the pop tax debate. Yeah, Preckwinkle is a Democrat, but many Democrats on the County Board opposed it. And higher up, I believe every Democratic candidate for governor has released a statement opposing the tax. There's actually a bipartisan bill proposed in the state legislature that'd declare the tax null and void. It might run into issues with some folks worrying about the concept of ceding local control, but it shows just how this tax is a loser with all cohorts.

Also, a poll found that 87 percent of Cook County residents oppose the tax. Given the county's political leanings, you can bet a strong majority of Democratic voters oppose it too. It cuts across party lines.

This is a perfect example of everything that's wrong with this state. Preckwinkle will claim that the soda tax will bring in $300mil (just using this number as an example), but in reality it will only bring in half because people will buy it elsewhere or simply stop buying it. So she'll spend all $300mil before it's even in her wallet. And when the credit card bill comes due, she'll cry poormouth that the tax didn't quite meet expectations and that they need another tax to pay off the bill.

Then the Dems or Preckwinkle will just find another tax to raise to support the bloated, over-priced, self-serving, farce that is govt in Illinois.

The soda tax is likely to be voted out today and Preckwinkle is now less popular than Donald Trump.

Totally NAILED IT! And make no mistake, this "disease" it really at the heart of why folks that come from the private sector end up wanting to just hang themselves when they face the entrenched "budget is busted, oh well we'll raise taxes" mindset that has gotten Illinois into a death spiral...

The goofy part is that one can argue that this sort of "works" on the FEDERAL level as global currency markets end up "re-adjusting" for the devaluation of the dollar due to deficit spending, limited growth, tax polices and other such factors -- Debt or Deficit: are we into trouble compared to other countries? | Stock Trend Investing Guide

In decades past, when Chicago politicians could count on the old fashioned "pork barrel" to keep the city from actually having sound finances, https://www.washingtonpost.com/archi...=.7dfc7f94348a, maybe it was OK to just shrug when there was a few billion dollar hole in the budget, but these days skipping payments is only digging a deeper pit -- https://www.marketplace.org/2015/06/...roblems-really

Now that the soda tax looks dead, the County will have to find new revenue. I don't know any specific places to cut. I suggest one: naming rights. The hospital is named after John Stroger, who probably didn't contribute one months pay. Of course tobacco and soft drink companies could not bid. Several courthouses. Then there are the Forest Preserves. And recreational trails. That ought to bring in a few million.

I have a good idea. How about eliminating the Cook County Forest Preserve Police and save some money. Do we really need police who are employed year 'round to guard a system of parks that's about 90% closed during the winter months? Do we really need police who spend 75% of their time driving from one placid forest preserve to another? Great place to trim back a bit and turn enforcement over to municipalities whose police know the issues locally.

How about that $100k picnic bench inspector. Or layoff a few politician's cerebrally challenged relatives employed by Cook Co.

Boy it will be painful to do without the services of a picnic bench inspector. I love how President TP thinks we cannot go on without all the idiots in Co government. Quite the case of megalomania.

Chicago needs to remove itself from Cook County and become an independent city. County residents will appreciate it and city residents will appreciate it. Chicago can focus on running the city and Cook Co can focus on the suburbs.

They should have let the suburbs secede from Cook Co and either join Dupage/Lake/Will or for their own county Lincoln like they wanted to when Stroger the lesser was running things. Next time I move I am going to Dupage Co. One less layer of Chicago Democrat trash.
