I tended to find more of that kind of thing living in the south. But it's not because people are inherently evil. They are raised to be polite to your face but will stab you in the back when you are not around. It's because they don't ever want to make anyone feel bad. NY is the opposite. They will say whatever they think right to your face and think nothing of it. I always felt the Midwest was somewhere in between.

I lived in Illinois for 25 years and left in 1990. Illinois was the worst state I ever lived in - conformist bullying culture all the way from high school to the University of Illinois when I decided to just leave. It's where if you are different then you will be rejected and bullied.

You paint a fairly wide brushstroke.

21 years for me, left middle of 2017. A lot of fond memories, and no bullying as post above alludes to. For me, it was all about the numbers. The city and state CAFR numbers spell out a very grim future indeed. The long term debt for the city is absolutely staggering-almost 36.5 billion dollars for the bonds that were sold, not including specialized ones for Midway and O'Hare. I became aware of this in 2012, and that's when the hunt started. You all are more than welcome to peruse the city annual report, start on page 212.

You can say the same about U.S.A ,a country with tons of debt and yet still one of the best

Unfortunately, you are absolutely correct. The one big difference, though, is that the U.S. as a whole is able to print money, Chicago and Illinois are not - we are at the mercy of the lenders.

But, since the U.S. can still print money, why wouldn't the country bail out one of its most populous states and cities? Because there are 98 other Senators whose constituents would say, "Not so fast, you dug this hole, you fill it yourselves". I honestly think that a law allowing states to go bankrupt will be seriously considered in the years going forward, and Illinois may be the catalyst.

Instead of nibbling around at the edges, Illinois needs to simply admit that it has a huge s**t sandwich to eat. And what's the best way to eat one of those? As big of bites as possible. The income tax rate needs to be jacked to about 8%, and the sooner, the better. And cut the heck out of services. It's time to reconcile where we're at.
