Default Hello from Scenic Southern Illinois!

Hi! I moved to Murphysboro two years ago from Texas and love Southern Illinois. I don't know much about Massac County and Metropolis specifically, but we have started a grassroots economic development listserve here and I put out a post to see if I could alert someone in that area to respond to your questions. What would you like to know about, specifically?

The climate is great, cost of living is low, countryside is beautiful.

I've been to Metropolis. It's not a bad city, and you get the whole Superman pop-culture thing. They also have a riverboat casino and hotel there. I'm not sure what else they have, but it seemed like a nice enough place when I was there visiting.

Metropolis is a great town approximately 9 miles from Paducah, KY. It is located in Massac County and known as "The Home of Superman". Each year in June a Superman Celebration is held. People are very friendly in this area & it is a great place for settling down. We are across the Ohio River from Paducah. For more information - check out the Metropolis, IL website. You'll be impressed!

Default Thinking of moving to Metropolis, IL?

I have lived in Metropolis since late 2002 - it's a nice town, but.... only if you are not a property owner. The property taxes are, in my opinion, a form of legalized (?) extortion on the part of Massac County. By my calculations, IF the multiplier remains static, I will have paid $37K in property taxes over the next 10 years, and a whopping $111K over the course of a 30-year mortgage - OUCH! In San Diego CA we would have paid only $53K over the same 30-year period for a larger home with a view of the Pacific Ocean! All that aside, the people are genuinely nice and Paducah, KY is just across the river! (I'll be moving there as soon as my house will sell...which may be a long time coming in this market and the tax sticker shock!)

I doubt if the OP is still hanging around here, but having lived in Joliet for a long term in the Cathedral District, she has my sympathy. Tons of changes in that town.

I have family in KY near Paducah, and it's much more affordable, serene, and generally liveable than the Illinois side.

The casino in Metropolis offers employment opportunity, but then so does Paducah.

I was born and raised in Metropolis. After college-- employment took me away. Honestly I pay more in taxes and have less to show for it right now. I will be moving back to Metropolis to retire and I could not think of a better place. The people are friendly, helpful, and wholesome. the countryside is beautiful.

I was born in Metropolis but was shipped north to my parents in Kankakee, IL. I have relatives on both sides of the river. My childhood memories of Metropolis were all good. The population hasn't changed much in 40 years. Housing is affordable but property taxes are too high for this area. You can probably blame the Illinois legislators for that scenerio as well as everywhere else in Illinois. Rental units are availabe and quite cheap compared to other towns. Metropolis is a nice retirement community. I would retire there since I have so much family in the area. The Shawnee National Forest and Land Between the Lakes regions are just a 20 to 30 minute drive and offer wonderful scenery and quaint, small towns to visit. The recent flood has ravaged the area, but the people are reslient and will fix the town quite nice again. The area west of North Ave and north of 10th Street is higher ground and did not flood. I visited the area in early May, 2011.
