A northern Illinois police officer has been ticketed for parking his patrol car in a handicapped-accessible parking space.

Lakemoor Police Chief David Godlewski said Tuesday that the officer was issued a $350 fine Sunday for parking illegally at the Lakemoor Crossings Shopping Center.

If he wasn't on official business, then good. Even if he was on official business, there had to be somewhere else to park the vehicle while attending to that business so a talking-to from his commander at a minimum would be in order.

I'm in downtown Chicago on business more often than I'd care to be, and the CPD just parks their squad cars anywhere at any time for any reason, official business or not. I've seen two cops finish up lunch, walk out to their squad car parked in a no-parking zone, and watched one of them write a ticket for a civilian vehicle parked in that very same no-parking zone. They're also well-known for setting up no parking zones at high-profile events like Bulls or Bears or Sox games only to let their friends and family park in those zones.

It's not something that registers particularly high on the police corruption scale, but it's still a bad look. And when the citizens see little stuff like that day in / day out, it breeds contempt between citizen and government and resentment toward cops even among those who would otherwise be inclined to support law enforcement.

Amen brother. Police believe they are better than others and act as if they are entitled to break the law and get away with it for 'the good of the people.'

Well, they aren't solving crimes so at least they're doing something (writing tickets).

Good. Now if they would start giving themselves tickets for speeding, driving constantly in the left lane, and not using signals for lane changes and turns ....
